Study of seasonal pollutant trends key to tackling air pollution: Data

New Delhi, A decade-long analysis of air quality data shows that pollutants in Indian cities, including the national capital, follow sharply different seasonal patterns, underscoring the need to study each pollutant separately rather than relying on broad air quality trends. Study of seasonal pollutant trends key to tackling air pollution: Data A new public dashboard developed by research and advisory think tank Envirocatalysts compiles daily air quality records from the Central Pollution Control Board since 2015, enabling users to track long-term trends across pollutants such as particulate matter , nitrogen dioxide , carbon monoxide and ozone “To truly curb air pollution, we must track multiple pollutants across diverse timelines. The variations of each pollutant are the fingerprints that expose underlying sources and factors, allowing us to move beyond broad data toward targeted action,” said Sunil Dahiya, founder and lead analyst of Envirocatalysts, explaining that understanding the complicated seasonal patterns of each pollutant is necessary to study air pollution overall. For example, a detailed analysis of the PM2.5 levels in Delhi from 2015 onwards shows a …

AQI still ‘poor’; 65% pollutants came from outside city in 2025: CREA report | Delhi News

AQI still ‘poor’; 65% pollutants came from outside city in 2025: CREA report | Delhi News

Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘Poor’ category on Saturday as the city recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 276 against Friday’s 236. In the neighbouring Noida, the AQI settled at 242 on Saturday, worsening as compared to Friday’s 229. Gurgaon, where the air quality had improved to ‘Moderate’ category on Friday, recorded an AQI of 244 on Saturday, as compared to Friday’s 178. The air quality in Delhi-NCR is likely to deteriorate further in the coming days, according to the forecast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for a moderate fog at many places in the Capital on Sunday with dense fog at isolated places. Meanwhile, an analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), a nonprofit, has found that about 65% of Delhi’s air pollution in 2025 originated from outside the city — largely from the other NCR districts and neighbouring states. Local sources accounted for the remaining 35%. As per experts, Despite modest year-on-year improvements in average PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations during …

Delhi records `very poor` AQI; high temperature, winds help disperse pollutants

Delhi records `very poor` AQI; high temperature, winds help disperse pollutants

The air quality in Delhi remained in the “very poor” category on Friday, despite the extensive bursting of firecrackers during Diwali celebrations the day before, news agency PTI reported. This was attributed to above-normal temperatures and favourable winds that aided in dispersing pollutants. A thick layer of haze blanketed the national capital, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 362 at 9 am, as many defied a citywide ban on firecrackers. However, conditions improved, and by 4 pm, the city`s 24-hour average AQI had dropped to 339, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The capital also experienced a rise in noise pollution levels between 6 pm and midnight on Diwali, as reported by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).  According to PTI, it was initially expected that Delhi`s air quality would deteriorate into the “severe” category owing to the firecracker usage, but it remained classified as “very poor.” Environmentalist Vimalendu Jha noted, “Despite the ban, firecrackers were burst in Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region). However, the air quality did not reach …

Explainer: Ammonia spike episodes in Delhi | Latest News Delhi

New Delhi: Delhi this week witnessed its first ammonia spike episode in Yamuna in the new year leading to disruption in operations in two of its nine water treatment plants. On January 8, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the capital’s water utility, issued an advisory stating that several parts of north, central and west Delhi are likely to face water supply shortages and supply at low pressure due to high levels of pollutants being received in Yamuna at Wazirabad pond. The water production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants was subsequently curtailed by 30-50%. The two Yamuna-fed plants supply around a quarter of the city’s 990 million gallons of water supply every day. PREMIUM Toxic foam covers the Yamuna in November. (Arvind Yadav/HT Photo) Ammonia spike episodes are not new to Delhi. A similar spike was reported on December 30. The scale of the problem of untreated industrial pollutants affecting city water supply can be gauged from the fact that the city annually witnesses 15 to 22 ammonia spike episodes spread over several days during …
