Dutta is the driving force behind the Tamralipta Matangini Swimming Center, dedicated to teaching local youth how to swim. Operating from a simple pond with no standard amenities, the 39-year old has managed to nurture several district and state-level swimmers. Two college students allegedly drowned while swimming in a pond near Bannerghatta on Saturday evening, police officers aware of the matter said on Sunday. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. (Representational image) The victims, identified as Deepu (21) and Yogeshwar (20), were students at SFS First Grade Degree College in Hebbagodi police station limits. Police said that the incident took place when a group of five friends, on their way back from a visit to Bannerghatta National Park, stopped at a temple pond for a swim. “While returning from Bannerghatta, the five-member group entered the temple pond,” said Bannerghatta police inspector M Krishna Kumar. “Deepu was the first to get into the water and attempted to swim, but he started struggling. Seven were girls among the deceased. Four people each drowned in two separate ponds in Kushaha village in Madanpur block and Itahat village in Barun block. The victims have been identified as Anku Kumari (15), Nisha Kumari (12), Chulbul Kumari (13), Lazo Kumari (15), Rashi Kumari (18), Pankaj Kumar (8), Sonali Kumari (13), Nilam Kumari (12) and Rakhi Kumari (12).  “The incidents took place when the victims along with their family members went to the ponds to take a holy bath on the occasion of ‘Jivitputrika’ festival, during which women fast for the well-being of their children,” said District Magistrate (DM) Srikant Shastri. “Officials concerned immediately reached the spots and retrieved them from the ponds and took them to the nearest hospitals, where doctors declared them dead,” the official added. Police registered a case on the complaint of the neighbour. (Representational) Budaun: A woman was booked for allegedly drowning five newborn puppies in a pond, police said on Thursday. Police have recovered the carcass of the pups and sent them for a post-mortem examination. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Siddharth Verma said a case has been registered against one Anita Devi and her husband Suryakant alias Bhura under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1860 and Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of the IPC on the complaint of her neighbour Vibhor Sharma. According to the police, a woman allegedly threw barely a day-old puppies in a pond in Basai village of the Bisauli police station area of the district during the wee hours of Thursday that resulted in their death.
