‘To promote cricket, my family helped CAP,’ says Pondicherry association founder P Damodaren | Cricket News

‘To promote cricket, my family helped CAP,’ says Pondicherry association founder P Damodaren | Cricket News

The Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) is a “clean” organisation where “players select themselves through performance”, according to P Damodaren, MD of Siechem Technologies Ltd who was president of Cricket Association of Pondicherry (CAP) till August. Damodaren was responding to a questionnaire from The Indian Express detailing the findings of its investigation, which found coaches at private academies offering documents for a “fee” to bypass the BCCI’s residency norms and qualify as local cricketers — and overlapping interests of Siechem and CAP. Edited excerpts: Q) This Ranji Trophy season, there were no Puducherry-born players in the playing XI for five consecutive matches. Since 2021, only five players hailing from Puducherry have featured in 29 matches. Why isn’t the CAP promoting local cricketers? A) Only those who are born, studying, employed, or residing in Pondicherry with valid proof as required by BCCI are selected to represent CAP. Even today, there are no major hospitals in Yanam (adjacent to AP), Mahe (adjacent to Kerala), Karaikal & Pondicherry (adjacent to TN). Parents naturally go to neighbouring cities in other states for …

Rise of Vidarbha cricket: Improving mental toughness, monsoon base in Pondicherry & nurturing India ambitions | Cricket News

Rise of Vidarbha cricket: Improving mental toughness, monsoon base in Pondicherry & nurturing India ambitions | Cricket News

“Do not stop any practice session until you have achieved what you set out to gain from that particular day,” Vidarbha’s in-form Yash Rathod tells a trio of enthusiastic teens who approached the southpaw for batting inputs. The 24-year-old also offered to call up his veteran teammate Karun Nair from the dugout to get them more insights on the ‘process’. “If you ask Karun bhai about something specific, maybe I’ll also learn something new from the chat,” Rathod tells the local Jaipur kids. Rathod’s hunger extends to team Vidarbha, the Ranji team which is geo-located at India’s zero mile stone, but only recently been at the centre of cricketing excellence, previously overshadowed by Mumbai and Maharashtra in domestic cricket. “The Indian system is so competitive that only fractions separate the top teams from the rest. At the right time, you have to be good,” coach Usman Ghani says after Vidarbha’s spotless day on the field. It is those decisive nuggets and fractions that Ghani and his bunch have polished and perfected over the last decade. …

A Unique Farm-to-Table Dining Experience in Pondicherry

The eloquence of farm-to-table isn’t merely stories behind the meal or the appreciation for the hard work that farmers put into growing quality ingredients. In this case, it is a deeper sense of the ecological impact of growing food, and what it takes to offset that. Concepts like re-wilding, foraging, local eating, free-range , integrative agriculture, jostle alongside organic cultivation, hydroponics, and permaculture. The experience of eating should connect you to where your food comes from, and how it is prepared, with respect for ingredients. The growing and preparing of food is the highest expression of human civilisation and culture, but also something that we are losing touch with. Traditional ingredients have a diminishing place in the modern kitchen and eating seasonally and locally has become nearly impossible. The keystone species in this area is the Palmyra tree. This tree is the state tree of Tamil Nadu and is called ‘katpaha tharu’ or celestial tree, because every part of the tree is used. From the 5th century BCE to around the 19th century, palmyra leaves …

Christmas in Pondicherry and Goa

The two enclaves of the east and west coasts of India have strikingly similar Christmas traditions. It will be an extra special Christmas for me this year, as I host my folks and my partner’s family for the first time at my home in Pondicherry. My family is catholic while his parents have been part of an ashram for many decades, yet it is Christmas that we are all coming together for. Nothing is ever too bizarre for India. Christmas was celebrated in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram while it was led by a Frenchwoman Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother by her followers. In the last 6 years, since I shifted into Pondicherry, I have always headed back to Goa to be with my mother. This year, as I decorate my home and plan for a big Christmas dinner, I try to figure what the Pondicherry Christmas experience is? I am curious to learn about the traditions of the festival in this small coastal town with a French colonial past, strong Tamil culture and the …
