Iranian oil returns to India after 7 years as supertankers dock at key ports

Iranian oil returns to India after 7 years as supertankers dock at key ports

Amid the concerns around the global oil and LPG crisis, two supertankers carrying Iranian crude have arrived at Indian ports on both the east and west coasts. This marked the first such deliveries in nearly seven years, according to ship-tracking data. Felicity, a very large crude carrier operated by the National Iranian Tanker Company, anchored off Sikka on Gujarat`s coast late Sunday, carrying about 2 million barrels loaded at Kharg Island in mid-March, as per PTI.  However, the buyers of the cargoes reaching Indian coasts have not been formally disclosed. A second tanker named Jaya was moored near Paradip on Odisha`s coast around the same time. As per the reports, the tanker is transporting a similar volume of crude, lifted from Kharg Island in late February, before the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran, followed by Tehran`s retaliation. Furthermore, the shipments are the first Iranian crude cargoes to reach Indian shores in nearly seven years, following a sanctions waiver issued by the United States last month. The order also shut down the northeastern land ports with Bangladesh to restrict the export of specific items from Bangladesh. The move is being interpreted as a fallout of the downturn in relations between New Delhi and Dhaka. The two sides are yet to develop a fully functional relationship after the fall of the Hasina government last August. What is the May order? Stopping import of readymade garments from Bangladesh through all land ports, the order said, “Import from Bangladesh shall not be allowed from any land port; however, it is allowed through Nhava Sheva and Kolkata seaports.” That apart, the order also banned export of fruit, fruit flavoured drinks, processed food items (baked goods, snacks, chips and confectionery), cotton and cotton yarn waste, plastic and PVC finished goods except pigments, dyes, plasticisers, and granules, and wooden furniture from Bangladesh …

India’s decision to curb Bangladeshi exports via land ports aimed at ensuring fairness: Sources

India on Saturday decided to allow entry of ready-made garments from Bangladesh only through Kolkata and Nhava Sheva seaports and barred imports of a range of consumer items through land transit posts in the Northeast. New Delhi: India, in a latest move, decided to curb Bangladeshi exports of ready-made garments and several other consumer goods through land ports. The move is aimed at ensuring fairness and equality in bilateral trade, according to government sources. The latest step by New Delhi sends a signal to Dhaka that it should not assume the Northeast as a captive market for its exports, and it cannot cherry-pick terms of bilateral trade solely for its benefit. India seeks to achieve the following objectives: Equal Market Access: Land port restrictions imposed by India on select exports from Bangladesh to the Northeast are expected to restore equality in the relationship. While India had hitherto allowed all exports from Bangladesh without restrictions, the transit and market access to the Northeast had been restricted by Bangladesh. This measure by India restores equal market …
