An 83-year-old retired Army colonel became the latest victim of online fraud in Bengaluru, losing Rs 56.05 lakh after scammers impersonating Mumbai police officers threatened him with arrest, reported news agency PTI. An FIR was registered at the Central CEN crime police station on November 18, officials said. According to the FIR, the victim received a call on October 27 from a man identifying himself as Mumbai police Inspector Sanjay Pishe, who claimed that a SIM card issued in the complainant`s name had been used to abuse the public, reported PTI. When the elderly man said he was unable to travel to Mumbai for an inquiry, he was connected via video call to a woman identifying herself as senior officer Kavita Pomane, and later to another person named Vishwas, who claimed to be a higher official. The accused, identified as Rajan Gupta from Jorawar village in Amethi district, had been living on rent near Kheria Mor for the past six months, pretending to be a soldier stationed at the Red Fort in Agra, according to a statement from the Superintendent of Government Railway Police (GRP). A 27-year-old employed as a gardener at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in Karol Bagh has been arrested for allegedly cheating patients who could not afford treatment and private hospitals in Delhi by posing as a government officer at the chief minister’s office (CMO). Police found that the suspect had made multiple calls posing as an officer from the MCD office where he worked and he also forged letters with the official letterhead, logos and signatures of the CMO. The Ministry of Defence has strongly urged everyone to remain vigilant and avoid sharing any details if approached by unknown contacts claiming to be from the military. New Delhi: In a serious alert issued by the Ministry of Defence, Indian citizens – especially journalists – have been cautioned against suspicious calls and messages coming from WhatsApp number 7340921702. According to the ministry, this number is being used by Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) who are masquerading as Indian Defence officials. As per official sources, the intent behind these calls is to extract sensitive information related to “Operation Sindoor”, which is currently underway. The cybercrime police in Haryana’s Nuh on Sunday arrested a man who allegedly posed as an Army officer and duped people. The police identified the accused as Mohammad Zahid, a resident of Tayra village in Rajasthan’s Deeg district. Officials said he was arrested after the cyber team tracked a suspicious mobile number active on the Pratibimb portal that was previously linked to a Rs 9,000 fraud in Kerala’s Kannur. The Pratibimb portal, launched last year, has details of SIM and IMEI numbers of suspected fraudsters, plotted in real time.
