Grid strains to meet peak daytime power demand; government says conserve | Business News

The country’s power grid struggled to fully meet peak daytime electricity demand for the first time during this summer, prompting the government on Friday to urge citizens to use electricity “wisely and judiciously”. The appeal comes amid reports of power cuts from several parts of the country as India recorded a peak daytime shortage of 188 megawatts (MW) for the first time this summer when electricity demand touched a record 270 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, according to data from the Grid Controller of India (Grid India). The shortfall was roughly equivalent to the peak electricity demand of a state like Manipur.  But any slight mismatch in demand and supply can cause extreme strain on the system, leading to fluctuation in grid frequency and can risk grid stability. Power cuts usually occur when demand exceeds supply of electricity and grid operators resort to load shedding. Peak demand figures, whether daily or monthly, are largely statistical reference points, as they reflect the highest load recorded at any moment during a given period on a particular day, often …

Transformer thefts cripples supply in Ludhiana circles

Transformer thefts cripples supply in Ludhiana circles

A surge in transformer thefts across Punjab State Power Corporation Limited’s (PSPCL) Ludhiana circles has significantly disrupted power supply, with officials attributing the rise to an organised scrap network targeting critical infrastructure components. A PSPCL employee repairs a transformer in Ludhiana on Saturday. (HT Photo) The incidents, which have escalated over recent months, are no longer being treated as isolated acts of pilferage. Senior PSPCL functionaries say the pattern points to a coordinated racket extracting copper windings, coils and other high-value fittings from transformers, rendering them unserviceable and triggering sudden outages across residential, rural and industrial areas. According to internal PSPCL data, 1,885 transformers had been rendered defunct due to theft till December 2025, compared with 1,176 during the corresponding period last year. The financial loss has climbed to ₹814.72 lakh. The highest number of cases has been reported from suburban circles (1,033), followed by Khanna circle (800). Despite FIRs being registered in every instance by the concerned subdivision officers (SDOs), police investigations have yielded no substantive breakthrough so far, compounding the utility’s concerns. PSPCL …
