FROM A former pharma CEO in Japan to a Spanish politician, a medical practitioner empanelled with the Saudi royals to a businessman in Malawi — the honours for overseas Indians this year typify the range and reach of the 35.4 million diaspora. The 27 individuals and organisations chosen for the 2025 Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA), to be honoured by President Droupadi Murmu Friday, hail from 24 countries, including Malawi in East Africa, Fiji, Spain, Romania, US and the UK. Among the awardees is Lekh Raj Juneja, 72, who was born in Haryana’s Gharaunda and travelled to Japan four decades ago to study fermentation science. Juneja, who headed a Japanese pharmaceutical firm earlier, now helms a snack company. He is being honoured in the ‘science & technology’ category. In a message to the global community, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday said the future is not in ‘yuddha’ (war) but in Buddha (Lord Buddha, who symbolises peace). Addressing the diaspora at the inaugural session of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention at Bhubaneswar, Modi said: “When there was a race to conquer the world with the power of swords, Emperor Ashoka chose the path of peace at Dhauli in Odisha (the host for convention). Dhauli in the state is the symbol of peace. This inspires India to tell the world that the future is not in yuddha (war) but in Buddha”. Modi underlined that India’s global role is rising because of its achievements in various fields. “The world listens carefully to India. Today’s India makes its points very strongly. Speaking at the event, he also highlighted the significance of the occasion, mentioning that the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj will commence in just a few days. He also noted the upcoming festivals of Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu, emphasising the joyous atmosphere prevailing across the country. In his address, the Prime Minister also praised Odisha’s profound cultural and historical heritage, noting its significant contributions to global trade and spirituality.  PM Modi also remarked on the ancient maritime connections of Odisha, where traders travelled to distant regions such as Bali, Sumatra, and Java.
