HistoriCity | Tamil Nadu: A Brief History from Presidency to Tamilakam

Tamil Nadu is among the richest states in India by any yardstick, be it by GDP or by per capita income. It is also the most endowed when it comes to history, imperial power, cultural artefacts and literature. For the rest of India, particularly the regions above the Vindhyas, people living south of the mountain range were referred to as ‘Madrasi’. This was not entirely without basis, the English East India Company and later the English government created the Madras presidency which covered an area more than 362,000 square kilometres and population of over 30 million between 1870 and 1920. The regions that the British administered from Fort St. George as Madras presidency were historically antagonistic to each other, linguistically disparate, and were also distinct geophysically. From the southern districts of Odisha (Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangir and others), to Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, large parts of Karnataka and present day Telangana to most of Tamil Nadu itself, what was termed the Madras presidency also consisted of fertile deltas as well as the Nilgiris where tea and coffee …

Maj Lally Virk wins Chandigarh Golf Club presidency with a big margin | Chandigarh News

Major (retd) Rajinder Singh Lally Virk, 57, has been elected President of the Chandigarh Golf Club, defeating Capt Mohanbir Singh (Bunny), 62, in the club’s annual elections held on Sunday. The closely watched contest between the two Army veterans saw Virk secure a decisive 775 votes against Bunny’s 471. Of the 1,254 votes polled, 1,246 were valid, with eight declared invalid. With nearly 1,800 eligible voters, the turnout was significant and marked a return to competitive elections after a phase of largely unanimous selections. While Capt Mohanbir Singh was contesting for the top post for the first time, Virk, a veteran of the 15 Guards regiment and former Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Tripura, had faced electoral setbacks earlier. He had unsuccessfully contested twice before. In the 2022 elections, Col Bobby Chahal won by a 97-vote margin, polling 505 votes to Virk’s 408 out of 1,154 votes cast. In the 2023 elections, Chahal again emerged victorious, this time by a slender margin of 29 votes. Chahal secured 591 votes, while his rival, Major Rajinder Singh …

‘Can Give Up Presidency In Exchange For Ukraine Joining NATO’: Zelensky

Kyiv: Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday — the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion — that he was ready to quit as Ukraine’s president if it meant Kyiv would be admitted to the NATO military alliance. Zelensky has faced fierce criticism from the new US administration and said he wants to meet Donald Trump before the US president meets his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Zelensky has been calling for Ukraine to be given NATO membership as part of any deal to end the war, but the Washington-led alliance has been reluctant to make a pledge. “If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready. … I can exchange it for NATO,” Zelensky told a Kyiv press conference, adding he would depart “immediately” if necessary. Zelensky and Trump have been engaged in a war of words since US and Russian officials met last week in Saudi Arabia for their first high-level talks in three years. The move shook the West’s policy to isolate the Kremlin and …

Executive order and its power explained as Trump vows ‘most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency’

Executive order and its power explained as Trump vows ‘most extraordinary first 100 days of any presidency’

Donald Trump is returning to the White House ready to immediately overhaul the government using the fastest tool he has — the executive order. During his first term, Trump, a Republican, signed 220. (X/@cb_doge) An incoming president signing a flurry of executive orders is standard practice. Executive orders allow a president to wield power without action from Congress. But there are also limits to what orders can achieve. A primer on how the presidential power works and its often fleeting impact: What are executive orders? Basically, they are signed statements about how the president wants the federal government to be managed. They can be instructions to federal agencies or requests for reports. Many orders can be unobjectionable, such as giving federal employees the day after Christmas off. They can also lay out major policies. For example, President Joe Biden signed an order to create a structure for establishing regulations on artificial intelligence. But executive orders — and their policy sausage-making siblings, the proclamation and political memorandum — also are used by presidents to pursue agendas …

Bengal: Partha as mentor, terror convict as batsman; inside Presidency jail, a cricket league in play | Kolkata News

It’s a league of its own where two former ministers of Mamata Banerjee Cabinet Partha Chatterjee and Jyotipriya Mallick are mentors of a cricket team and terror attack convicts Jamaluddin Naser and Aftab Ansari are players. Every year, Kolkata’s Presidency Jail organises a cricket tournament — Presidency Premier League (PPL) — a mini T20 championship, inspired by the Indian Premier League (IPL). This year, the tournament has become bigger with five teams — ‘Mumbai Indians’, ‘Sunrise Hyderabad’, ‘Kolkata Kings’, Royal Challengers’, and ‘Chennai Super Kings’. While the first four teams comprise inmates, prison staff make up the fifth one — ‘Chennai Super Kings’. The first match of this season’s PPL was held on November 22 between ‘Kolkata Kings’ and ‘Chennai Super Kings’. ‘Kolkata Kings’ — mentored by job scam accused Sujay Krishna Bhadra, also known as ‘Kalighater Kaku’ — has “star players” like Kader Khan, the Park Street rape accused; Kunal Gupta, the call centre scam accused; and Anisur Rehman, accused of killing TMC leader Kurban Shah in Panskura. However, jail staff, including jailers, playing …

Brazil legend Ronaldo in race for Brazilian Football Federation presidency

Brazil legend Ronaldo in race for Brazilian Football Federation presidency

Unlike several other legends, including his great peer in Real Madrid. Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo had stayed away from the game, apart from fleeting stints as a media pundit. But the stalwart forward has set his eyes on becoming the president if his country’s football federation. “I can’t return to the field as many of you ask me to do,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “And, honestly, I don’t even think that our biggest defeats in recent years were within the four lines. They were not televised. We need to look outside the spotlight. Into the institution,” he said. “My motivations for this candidacy are countless and perhaps the biggest of them is to believe that I can truly contribute to regain respect for Brazilian football,” he added. Since winning the 2002 World Cup, their fifth—Ronaldo was one of the stars and the golden boot winner—Brazil have stumbled in the knockouts, their title drought incensing the feverish fans and vexing the coaches. As part of his ambition, he said he envisages to travel around his country. “I’m …
