The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, which attracted controversy across the state, inadvertently brought unexpected joy to a household in Bagda when a man believed dead for nearly three decades walked through his house door. Jagbandhu Mandal, now 55, had vanished on a cold February morning in 1997, leaving behind his wife, Supriya, and their two young children. After exhaustive searches, and even an astrologer’s grim confirmation of his death, the family performed his last rites and moved on with …

“487 Presumed Indians With Final Removal Orders”: Centre On US Deportations

New Delhi: The Centre today announced that they have been told by US authorities that there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with “final removal orders”. This announcement comes in the backdrop of a political row over 104 Indian migrants who were sent back to India, chained and shackled, on a C-17 US military aircraft on Wednesday.  “We’ve been told there are 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.  A US military aircraft carrying the migrants landed in Amritsar, marking the first mass deportation under President Donald Trump’s administration. The deportees, who had attempted to enter the United States through illegal channels, were piled up in an aircraft and were reportedly shackled and restrained throughout the flight, only to be freed upon arrival in India. “Their legal position and status insofar as the US justice system is concerned, we have some information on the number of immigrants concerned. We are working with such numbers made available to us,” Mr Misri said.  On the US using military aircraft to deport Indians, …

Heavy polling in Kunnathunadu and Perumbavoor Assembly segments, which are part of the Chalakudy Lok Sabha constituency, has left the Twenty20 camp upbeat as it considers the belt as its stronghold. Kizhakkambalam, Mazhuvannoor, Aikkaranadu and Kunnathunadu panchayats governed by Twenty20 fall within the Kunnathunadu Assembly constituency, which led the charts in terms of voter turnout. Kunnathunadu racked up the biggest voter turnout across all 14 constituencies in Ernakulam district. Both Kunnathunadu and Perumbavoor Assembly constituencies were the first to cross the 60% voter turnout mark in the district with just two hours left for the polling to conclude. At final count, Kunnathunadu clocked a voter turnout of 78.11% and Perumbavoor 73.13%. “Heavy polling witnessed in our strongholds of Kunnathunadu, Perumbavoor, and Chalakudy is a clear sign in our favour. In fact, we will amass votes more than the combined vote share of UDF and LDF candidates. All three fronts will drop votes in our favour, and the LDF will suffer the biggest setback. Earlier, people did not have an option and had to alternate between …
