Sindhu, Lakshya reach final with comfortable wins

Indian shuttlers had an outstanding outing in the Syed Modi India International, a BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament, at the Babu Banarasi Das Indoor Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday. After gritty performances in the semifinal, India shuttlers confirmed their places in the final of all five categories. The finals will take place on Sunday, starting with the mixed doubles final at 12:00 PM IST. The day started with the top-seeded PV Sindhu making the light work of the youngster Unnati Hooda in the all-Indian semifinal of the women’s singles category. Sindhu registered a comfortable straight-game (21-12, 21-9) victory against Unnati, who had no answer to Sindhu’s aggressive gameplay and suffered a heavy defeat, winning just 21 points throughout the match. In the final, Sindhu will take on the Chinese player Wu Luo Yu, who made an upset, knocking out the higher-ranked Lalinrat Chaiwan of Thailand in her semi-final match. Syed Modi Super 300 Badminton: Priyanshu Rajawat has high ambitions, but body and mind must align more often | Badminton News

When about his grand plans for the future, Priyanshu Rajawat takes a couple of seconds to ponder, before replying that he hopes to be world No 1 one day (breaking into the top 20 is his immediate target). Tell him that his game style often elicits comparisons with Srikanth Kidambi, he nods in agreement with a smile. To get to where Srikanth did once, the youngster knows that taking care of his body is key, but also figuring out how to cut down on his mistakes. On Saturday, Priyanshu went down for the second straight year at the semifinals stage of the Syed Modi India International, as Singapore’s Jason Teh Jia Heng won 21-13, 21-19 in 48 minutes. While Lakshya Sen dominated his semifinal against Japanese Shogo Ogawa 21-8, 21-14, the potential blockbuster final between him and Priyanshu wouldn’t happen now. After his quarterfinal win, Priyanshu said that he had put in a lot of work for the Syed Modi event this year because he wanted a title at the home event. He was also …

Transformed by Gopichand, Anupama stuns Beiwen Zhang

Anupama Upadhyaya, the World No. 50, pulled off the biggest win of her career by ousting the gritty Beiwen Zhang, World No. 15, in the first round of the China Masters in Shenzhen on Tuesday. Shaking off the rust of travelling and reaching Shenzhen on Monday afternoon, the 19-year-old shuttler from Almora defeated Zhang 21-17, 8-21, 22-20 in a thrilling 48-minute Round of 32 clash, marking her maiden entry into the second round of a Super 750 event. It was also her first win against a top-20 player. In July, she lost to Michelle Li, then ranked World No. 20, in the second round of the Canada Open. Despite playing on a sluggish court, Anupama, who recently switched to the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad from the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, displayed remarkable resilience. She tested Zhang’s defence in every rally, capitalising on her improved fitness and swift movement. Anupama, who had little acquaintance with the Shenzhen Bay Gymnasium courts, raced to a 9-3 lead in the opening game, keeping Zhang guessing …

Priyanshu Rajawat suffers straight-game defeat, ousted in 1st round

Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat faced his second consecutive first-round exit, losing in straight games to Brian Yang of Canada at the China Open in Changzhou on Tuesday. Priyanshu, who was ousted by Takuma Obayashi in the first round of the Hong Kong Open last week, lost 13-21, 16-21 in just 36 minutes against Yang. World No. 24 Yang asserted his dominance from the outset, winning five consecutive points in the opening game, while Priyanshu could only manage two. The Canadian player maintained control throughout the second game as well, with Priyanshu struggling to counter Yang’s precise placements. Yang’s wide reach and ability to dictate the pace also made it difficult for Priyanshu to gain a foothold in the match Yang’s defensive prowess was on full display, winning 42 rallies compared to Priyanshu’s 29. This loss is a significant setback for India, as Priyanshu was considered one of the country’s top contenders in the tournament. Can Treesa-Gayatri rekindle their form on World Tour?

The China Open, the final Super 1000 event on the World Tour in 2024, is set to commence on Tuesday in Changzhou, China. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, India’s top-ranked women’s doubles pairing, will look to end their search for an impressive outing after a series of inconsistent results. Ranked 26th in the world, Treesa and Gayatri returned to action at the Hong Kong Open for the first time after failing to qualify for the Paris Olympics. However, their campaign was cut short by a second-round defeat against China’s Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning. At just 23-year-old, Treesa and Gayatri have shown promise in the last few seasons and are seen as a pair which has the potential to follow the footsteps of their men’s doubles counterparts Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. In 2023, Treesa and Gayatri raised expectations by reaching the All England Open semifinals and also contributed to India’s historic win at the Badminton Asia Team Championships earlier this year. Earlier this season, Coach Vimal Kumar, hailed them as India’s medal hopefuls …
