David Attenborough, the excited but hushed voice of nature programs, turns 100

The BBC is hosting a party for David Attenborough at the Royal Albert Hall. Cinemas are playing his nature films. Friends have spent weeks lavishing praise on the man and his work. (File photo/REUTERS) But the world’s most famous wildlife presenter is likely to be uncomfortable with all the attention as he celebrates his 100th birthday on Friday, said Alastair Fothergill, the producer of some of Attenborough’s most well-known documentaries. “He’s always been very clear to all of us that work with him: ‘Remember, the animals are the stars, I’m not,’’’ Fothergill told The Associated Press. “So, yes, surprisingly for one of the most famous men on the planet, he doesn’t like being famous at all.” Glorious gorillas But Attenborough has had to accept the accolades this week as scientists, politicians and conservationists celebrated the man who has brought frolicking gorillas, breaching whales and tiny poisonous frogs into living rooms around the world for more than 70 years. Through BBC programs such as Life on Earth, …

‘We’re fighting wars, not day care’: Trump budget seeks $1.5T in defense spending alongside cuts in domestic programs  | World News

US President Donald Trump has proposed increasing defence spending to $1.5 trillion in his 2027 budget, while reducing funding for several domestic programmes, according to the Associated Press (AP). The proposal, released on Friday, outlines a sharp rise in Pentagon spending about 44% higher alongside a 10% cut in non-defence expenditure. The plan reflects the administration’s focus on military investment. “President Trump promised to reinvest in America’s national security infrastructure, to make sure our nation is safe in a dangerous world,” Budget Director Russell Vought said, as quoted by AP. The US president’s budget proposal does not have the force of law. Congress will decide on final spending levels and can reject or change the plan. Focus on defence, immigration and law enforcement The White House said the budget prioritises defence, immigration enforcement and public safety. (via REUTERS) Officials added that Ikner is currently not cooperating with police. “Unfortunately, her son had access to one of her weapons and that was one of the weapons that was found at the scene,” McNeil said. “We are continuing that investigation into how that weapon was used and what other weapons, perhaps, he may have had access to.” The sheriff said Phoenix Ikner has been “steeped in the Leon County Sheriff’s Office family” and was involved with training programs. “So it’s not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons,” he said. The shooting that took place on the campus left two people dead and five others injured. US court allows Trump to enforce ban on DEI programs, for now | World News

A US appeals court on Friday said the Trump administration could temporarily implement a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs at federal agencies and businesses with government contracts, which had been blocked by a judge. The Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the directives by President Donald Trump, including an order urging the Department of Justice to investigate companies with DEI policies, were likely constitutional, disagreeing with a February ruling by a federal judge in Maryland. But two of the three judges on the 4th Circuit panel wrote separately they did not agree with the substance of Trump’s orders and that agencies that implement them may risk violating the US Constitution. Story continues below this ad “Despite the vitriol now being heaped on DEI, people of good faith who work to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion deserve praise, not opprobrium,” Circuit Judge Albert Diaz wrote. Circuit Judge Allison Rushing, a Trump appointee, responded that her colleagues’ policy views were irrelevant to whether Trump’s directives should stand. “A judge’s opinion that DEI …

FCC to investigate Comcast for having DEI programs

FCC to investigate Comcast for having DEI programs

Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr has asked his agency to investigate Comcast’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) practices, reports Newsmax. “We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will be cooperating with the FCC to answer their questions,” Comcast spokesperson Joelle Terry confirms to The Verge. According to Newsmax, Carr said that FCC is looking for signs that the company’s initiatives have violated federal employment law, writing: “I expect that this investigation into Comcast and its NBCUniversal operations will aid the commission’s broader efforts to root out invidious forms of DEI discrimination across all of the sectors the FCC regulates.” Since taking control of the FCC last month, Carr has threatened to pull broadcast licenses of companies like Disney and CBS for airing content that’s not friendly to Trump and conservatives. He has also ordered investigations into NPR and PBS for “airing commercials,” which fellow Commissioner Anna Gomez told The Verge was a Trump administration “effort to weaponize the power of the FCC.” Carr was a Trump appointee, and he wrote the …

US President-elect Donald Trump said in an interview on Thursday that he will have a “big discussion” about ending childhood vaccination programs with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., his nominee to run the Department of Health and Human Services, and might scrap some vaccines. When asked if his administration could get rid of some vaccines: “It could if I think it’s dangerous, if I think they are not beneficial, but I don’t think it’s going to be very controversial in the end,” Trump said. “We’re going to have a big discussion. The autism rate is at a level that nobody ever believed possible. If you look at things that are happening, there’s something causing it,” Trump told Time magazine. Asked if he thinks childhood autism is linked to vaccines, Trump said: “No, I’m going to be listening to Bobby,” referring to Kennedy. Trump said he had a lot of respect for Kennedy and his views on vaccinations. Trump has suggested in the past that vaccines might be linked to autism. When asked on Thursday if he …

Mozilla Foundation eliminates its advocacy and global programs divisions

The Mozilla Foundation laid off 30 percent of its workforce and completely eliminated its advocacy and global programs divisions, TechCrunch reports.  While Mozilla is best known for its Firefox web browser, the Mozilla Foundation — the parent of the Mozilla Corporation — describes itself as standing up “for the health of the internet.” With its advocacy and global programs divisions gone, its impact may be lessened going forward. “Fighting for a free and open internet will always be core to our mission, and advocacy continues to be a critical tool in that work. We’re revisiting how we pursue that work, not stopping it,” Brandon Borrman, the Mozilla Foundation’s communications chief, said in an email to The Verge. Borrman declined to confirm exactly how many people were laid off, but said it was about “30% of the current team.” This is Mozilla’s second round of layoffs this year. In February, the Mozilla Corporation laid off around 60 workers said it would be making a “strategic correction” that would involve involve cutting back its work on a …
