Sachin Siwach progresses, Rupa-Pinki stay unbeaten
India continued its Glasgow Commonwealth Games campaign on Saturday with mixed results across lawn bowls, boxing, swimming and wheelchair basketball. In lawn bowls, India’s women’s pairs duo of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, who defeated Malta in a tie-break on the opening day, returned to action against Tonga. After a slow start, the Indians edged past Tonga in another tie-break to register their third consecutive sectional win. India took the opening set 5-2 before Tonga bounced back to claim the second set 6-0, forcing the tie-break, where the Indian pair held their nerve. At the boxing arena, Sachin Siwach booked his place in the men’s 55kg Round of 16 with a 4-1 split-decision win over Keoma Al Ahmadieh in the Round of 32. Siwach handled his opponent’s aggression well and maintained his composure throughout the contest, landing a series of clean punches to secure the victory. Meanwhile, Aryan Nehra and Dhakshan Shashikumar missed out on qualification for the men’s 400m freestyle final.
