Indore Water Contamination: How A 120-Year-Old Pipeline Network Is Linked To The Crisis | India News

Last Updated:January 02, 2026, 18:00 IST Local newspapers had reported as early as October last year that residents of Bhagirathpura complained of foul-smelling, yellowish water with an “acid-like burning” sensation Indore residents say that new roads often come up while ageing water pipelines beneath them remain untouched. (News18 Hindi) More than a century after piped water first began flowing into homes here in 1906, Indore is once again in the headlines, this time over contaminated water that has reportedly claimed nine lives. Ironically, the very pipeline network that once symbolised modern civic vision is now being linked to a serious public health emergency in the Madhya Pradesh city. The Holkar rulers funded and developed much of the city’s early infrastructure, including the pipeline network and sanitation systems. In fact, several of those pipelines, particularly in the old quarters, date back 80-100 years and are still in use …

When we give up hope for our children

When we give up hope for our children

December 4, 2025 08:06 AM IST First published on: Dec 4, 2025 at 08:06 AM IST On World Children’s Day, celebrated annually on November 20, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi-NCR showed shocking levels of particulate matter. On this occasion, a question should have haunted us all: How can we violate our children’s right to health and well-being? Unfortunately, there is a fatalistic and grudging acceptance of air pollution as part of everyday living. The logic that the show must go on and business must remain uninterrupted is revealing. Our idea of what constitutes progress and prosperity is playing havoc with children’s minds and bodies. Every year, from Delhi in India to Lahore in Pakistan, the situation worsens in winter. Children are forced to endure particulate matter-laden smog in order to get to school. The Commission for Air Quality Management issues advisories and directs the implementation of the Graded Response Action Plan in Delhi amidst the annual blame game. Warnings about how worsening AQI increases the respiratory vulnerability of children and the elderly come …

He said a “similar crisis was unfolding in Visakhapatnam as the level of PM10 had increased by 32.9% in the past seven years”. This, he said, was “despite the allocation of Rs 129.4 crore under the National Clean Air Programme for Andhra Pradesh while only Rs 39.6 crore has been utilised.” In order to tackle the problem, he said there was a “need for social and political will to declare a war on pollution”. …
