US Courts To Begin Publishing Spyware Records From 2029

US Courts To Begin Publishing Spyware Records From 2029

The government’s spyware playbook has had one big problem for the public: there has been no reliable count of how often it is used. That is set to change as U.S. federal courts prepare to track spyware and hacking-based communications interceptions in a new category of the annual Wiretap Report. The development matters because spyware can put investigators much closer to the source of a person’s communications than conventional network interception can. Yet while the judiciary has published detailed statistics on court-authorized wiretaps for decades, those reports have not separately shown how many specifically involved government spyware techniques. The figures to come will still leave some questions unanswered. But they will give lawmakers, researchers and the public something they have largely lacked: a number that can be tracked from one year to the next. What the agreement introduces According to TechCrunch, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts will add a “spyware/hacking” category to the annual Wiretap Report. That will allow courts to separately count cases in which hacking techniques are authorized to intercept communications. …

What to know about Jimmy Lai’s Hong Kong journey from media mogul and activist to convict | World News

The 78-year-old outspoken critic of China’s ruling Communist Party awaits sentencing Monday after being convicted in December of conspiring to commit sedition and collude with foreign forces. Observers say his landmark trial came to symbolise a crackdown that began in 2020 on press and other freedoms that has changed Hong Kong, the former British colony that returned to China’s control in 1997. The Hong Kong government insists Lai’s case has nothing to do with press freedom, but instead is an example of righteousness upheld by the law. A migrant from mainland China, he made a fortune in the garment industry in Hong Kong and later founded the Apple Daily newspaper, where he wrote articles criticising the Chinese and Hong Kong governments for limiting freedoms. The publication eventually was shuttered and his words became trial evidence. Here is what to know about his unusual journey to political activism that has ended, at least for the moment, in prison. Story continues below this ad Lai was born in 1947 in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, once …

JLF 2024: “A feminist publishing house like Kali for Women can’t come up today”: Ritu Menon, publisher | Books and Literature News

Distributors demanding more books published every year, disproportionate publicity for already popular authors, and less shelf space in bookstores are some of the causes that will prohibit an independent and politically-aligned publisher like Kali from coming up today, according to co-founder and veteran publisher Ritu Menon. “Ours is a political project, linked closely to the women’s movement and feminist perspective… There’s no shelf space in bookstores today. The volume of english-language books published today is 50 times that of when we started. There are a total of 3,000 bookstores in India that carry our books. We become invisible. We don’t get spacing in popular stores like Delhi’s Midland, which store us in the back. In the front are travel and self-help, Shashi Tharoor, Devdutt Pattanaik…” said Menon. She was in conversation with co-founder Urvashi Butalia and publisher Sivapriya R on the 40th anniversary of Kali’s founding on day two of Jaipur Literature Festival 2024. “So many Kali writers have gone on to mainstream success. We have constantly been creating the ground for new voices in …
