Pune-Mumbai Expressway, other highways choke as weekend, festive and tourist rush peaks

Heavy weekend commuter traffic between Pune and Mumbai, further intensified by the festive season and a surge of tourists heading to hill stations, led to severe congestion in the ghat section of the Pune–Mumbai Expressway Saturday. The situation compelled the highway police to implement half a dozen traffic breaks to ease the jam. State highway police officers said the congestion also spilled over onto the old Pune–Mumbai highway and several bypass roads within Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Other highways connecting Pune to Satara, Nashik, Solapur, and Ahilyanagar also witnessed a weekend traffic surge, resulting in multiple traffic snarls. Highway police said the ghat section was the primary choke point for both the Expressway and the Old Highway, as a major surge in vehicles plying between the two metros and to hill stations was reported. Traffic movement slowed significantly when multiple heavy vehicles broke down on gradients in the ghat stretch, partially blocking the lanes and disrupting the flow. Shivshahi bus catches fire on Pune-Mumbai expressway, no casualties | Pune News

A Shivshahi luxury bus caught fire near the Talegaon toll post on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway on Sunday. No casualties were reported in the incident. The Shivshahi bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was taking passengers from Swargate depot in Pune city to Kalyan when the incident happened. There were 12 passengers in the bus. Around 8.15 am, the rear side of the bus caught fire. A person travelling in a private vehicle coming from behind saw the fire and informed the bus driver. The bus driver immediately stopped the bus and the passengers were evacuated. After receiving information, fire brigade teams of the IRB and Talegaon MIDC fire station reached the spot. “The fire was brought under control in a few minutes. However, the entire bus was damaged. Even though the passengers had stepped out, some of them had left their belongings inside the bus which were gutted,” said D P Dorugade, fire officer of Talegaon MIDC fire station.The reason behind fire was yet to ascertained and the fire officer said that …
