People of Punjab won’t tolerate disrespect of their Gurus, will punish…”: BJP chief Nitin Nabin slams CM Bhagwant Mann | Chandigarh News

In a scathing attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over the alleged sacrilege video, BJP national president Nitin Nabin said on Sunday that the “people of Punjab will not tolerate the disrespect of their Gurus” and that the “time has come to punish him for the act”. With the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections drawing closer, Mann has been embroiled in a major controversy over an alleged sacrilege video purportedly showing him sprinkling liquor on images of Sikh Gurus. The Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, has declared the video “authentic” on the basis of forensic reports and described Mann as “Guru dokhi” (anti-Guru) and “panth virodhi” (anti-panth). Mann, however, has maintained that the person in the video was not him but an actor used to defame him. Nabin, who is on a three-day visit to Punjab, addressed a karyakarta sammelan in Ludhiana on Sunday. Attacking Mann, he said from the stage: “It would be better if I do not comment on the working style of Punjab’s Chief Minister. It feels disheartening …

SC says law adequate to punish hate speech, underlines enforcement deficit

Law is adequate to punish hate speech, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday, as it turned down a petition to declare it and rumour mongering as separate offences under the penal code, saying constitutional courts cannot compel the legislature to create laws and underlining the enforcement deficit. The Supreme Court said hate speech and rumour-mongering affect the constitutional ideal of fraternity. (HT PHOTO) “Creation of criminal offences lies within the legislative domain. The judiciary cannot create new offences in keeping with the separation of powers under the Constitution,” said a bench of justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta. Advocate and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay filed a petition in 2021 seeking the declaration of hate speech as a separate offence. The court has since taken up pleas over hate speech, including during the 2023 Haridwar Dharam Sansad. It has issued interim orders directing police to mandatorily register cases in such matters. Dismissing all petitions in the matter, the bench said they arise not from a deficit in law but in enforcement. “The contention that …

US will ban foreign officials to punish countries for social media rules

The US State Department has launched its latest rebuke against Europe and other countries over their attempts to regulate digital platforms. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that the US would restrict visas for “foreign nationals who are responsible for censorship of protected expression in the United States.” He called it “unacceptable for foreign officials to issue or threaten arrest warrants on U.S. citizens or U.S. residents for social media posts on American platforms while physically present on U.S. soil” and “for foreign officials to demand that American tech platforms adopt global content moderation policies or engage in censorship activity that reaches beyond their authority and into the United States.” It’s not yet clear how or against whom the policy will be enforced, but seems to implicate Europe’s Digital Services Act, a law that came into effect in 2023 with the goal of making online platforms safer by imposing requirements on the largest platforms around removing illegal content and providing transparency about their content moderation. Though it’s not mentioned directly in the press release …

The ball was collected by MI wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton and neither him nor the bowler showed any inclination to appeal for a caught behind.
