Congress says no rift in Punjab. The meetings, boycotts and ultimatums suggest otherwise

Less than a year before Punjab goes to the polls, the Congress is consumed by a fight over who should lead the party into that election — a fight that its central leadership continues to insist does not exist. Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring (left) and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi (right). The rift centres on two men: Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress president the high command has backed, and Charanjit Singh Channi, the former chief minister and Jalandhar MP leading the challenge. The stakes are high. Congress was reduced to 18 seats in Punjab in 2022, its worst-ever result in the state, as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swept to power with 92. The party has cast the 2027 election — due early next year — as its chance to recover, which is exactly why factions within it are battling over who leads that campaign. New temple, pilgrimages, and ‘Humare Ram’: In Punjab, AAP steps up Hindu outreach with Kejriwal’s big promises

As the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) steps up its outreach also to Hindu voters ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections due in about seven months, party chief Arvind Kejriwal has announced a series of religious and cultural initiatives. These include temple redevelopment, expanded pilgrimage routes and Ramayana-themed programmes, even as the party navigates parallel controversies involving Sikh religious institutions. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann during a devotional music programme organised by the state government in Amritsar (PTI Photo) Kejriwal, during his three-day visit to Punjab while participating in the Punjab government’s ‘Ek Shaam Bhagwan Shiv Ke Naam’ (religious discourse on Lord Shiva) programmes in Jalandhar, Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Batala, made the announcements. He claimed no previous government had organised devotional gatherings on such a scale, and announced that the programme would now be expanded across all 22 districts of Punjab. 5 promises by Kejriwal Among five promises that the AAP shared as separate short videos on its social media handles, the former Delhi CM announced a ₹80-crore redevelopment of …

Harbhajan meets Shah weeks after BJP switch amid ‘Rajya Sabha seat sale’ feud with AAP: ‘Extensive discussion’

He had promised to name those responsible but hasn’t yet. Union home minister Amit Shah hosts former cricketer Harbhajan Singh in New Delhi. Hunn mainu loko oey gaddar dassso kaun?” — ‘Tell me who is responsible for what happened with the Rajya Sabha? How Kejriwal-led AAP and Raghav Chadha had a slow-burn breakup| India News

Raghav Chadha made arguably the biggest move of his political career so far on Friday, April 24, as he walked in for a press conference at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, and left a BJP man. But only after trumping the AAP, the party he’d co-founded, on numbers; and leaving his ex-boss Arvind Kejriwal in a big bind ahead of assembly elections in Punjab. (Jitender Gupta /ANI Photo) Flanked by fellow Rajya Sabha MPs Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Kumar Mittal, Chadha did what many had largely seen coming for months. But in a manner that was a minor political earthquake. He announced that seven of AAP’s 10 Rajya Sabha MPs — two-thirds of the party’s Upper House strength — were merging with the Centre’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), invoking the constitutional provision under the Tenth Schedule that protects such a large group from disqualification. “The Aam Aadmi Party, which I nurtured with my blood and sweat …

Regional Buzz | AAP’s Doaba focus

With nearly a year left for the Punjab assembly elections, chief minister Bhagwant Mann has intensified his political activity in the Doaba region, holding two ‘Lok Milnis’ within a one month at his Jalandhar-based camp office. During these outreach programmes, he heard public grievances in the presence of senior police and civil administration officials to ensure their timely redressal. In the 2024 Jalandhar West byelection, Mann shifted into a rented accommodation in the city, stating that he would run the government from Jalandhar twice a week for the convenience of residents of Doaba and Majha. Later, he shifted to government accommodation and made his camp office operational. “Such milnis help bridge the gap between the government and the masses, further strengthening responsive and transparent governance,” Mann said. In 2022, while the AAP wave swept Malwa and Majha regions, its impact remained restricted in Doaba region, where the party managed to win only 10 of the 23 seats. Mann shifted into a rented accommodation in the city, stating that he would run the government from Jalandhar …

Cracks appear in Punjab Congress over calls for Dalit representation in party by Channi

Cracks appear in Punjab Congress over calls for Dalit representation in party by Channi

An internal discord in the Punjab Congress came to the fore after a video of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi surfaced on social media in which he could be heard seeking representation for Dalits in the party. The Jalandhar MP, however, asserted he did not speak against any particular caste or community, and that he was a victim of malicious propaganda on social media. While speaking during a meeting of the party’s Scheduled Caste (SC) wing in Chandigarh on Saturday (January 17, 2026), Mr. Channi said, “In Punjab, if you accept that there is a population of 35-38% [of Dalits], which is there, then why are we not getting representation.” He also said, “Punjab [Congress] president is from upper caste, CLP leader is from upper caste, women wing of Punjab Congress from upper caste, Punjab [Congress] general secretary from upper caste? Where do we go? Where will these people go?” Mr. Channi, a prominent party leader from the Dalit community, was accompanied in the meeting by Rajendra Gautam, the chairman of the All India …
