Farmers hold candlelight marches on Punjab-Haryana borders

Agitating farmers on Saturday evening took out candlelight marches on the interstate borders of Punjab and Haryana to support their demands, comprising legal guarantee of the minimum support price of their crops. At the same time, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said they would not end their agitation till their demands are met. He clarified that their protest may continue even after the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls comes into effect. Crowds of farmers have been camping in the open skies at Khanauri and Shambhu borders of Punjab with Haryana after their march to the national capital has been stopped since February 13. Singh (21), a native of Bathinda, was killed and 12 police personnel injured in clashes at Khanauri border point on the Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday. The incident took place when some protesting farmers were trying to head towards barricades. “The family of Shubhkaran Singh, who got martyred during the farmer’s movement on the Khanauri border, will be given financial assistance of ₹1 crore by the Punjab government and a government job to his younger sister. Due legal action will be taken against culprits,” Mr. Mann said in a post in Punjabi. Farmers to stay put at Punjab-Haryana borders as deadlock persists

Protesting farmers will stay put at the two borders of Punjab and Haryana over their various demands as the deadlock persisted despite the third round of talks with a panel of Union ministers, reported news agency PTI. Protesters stay put at Punjab-Haryana border, govt-farmers talks on Thursday

Three Union ministers will meet farmer leaders in Chandigarh Thursday for another round of talks as the standoff between the protesters and police at the Punjab-Haryana border entered its second day, marked by more clashes between the two sides. At Shambhu border point near Ambala, there was intermittent shelling Wednesday by security personnel at the `Delhi Chalo` protesters who are demanding minimum support price for their crops. Tear smoke was used whenever any group of farmers moved towards the barricades. Security personnel faced stone-pelting from the protesters. A similar standoff continued at the at Data Singhwala-Khanauri border in Haryana`s Jind district.But the situation remained less volatile compared to Tuesday, when farmers tried to shift cement barriers at Shambhu with their tractors, attempting to push towards Delhi. Tear Gas Fired At Farmers Marching Towards Delhi At Punjab-Haryana Border

New Delhi: Tear gas has been fired at farmers massing at the Shambhu border point between Punjab and Haryana – a key meeting point for farmers from each state heading to Delhi as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ call. Visuals showed huge plumes of smoke – making visibility almost impossible – and hundreds of farmers, as well as media personnel, running helter-skelter to the sound of tear gas shells being fired. The shelling – the first signs of violence – broke as the clock struck noon and the farmers began their push to Delhi. An estimated two dozen shells were fired, despite no immediate signs of provocation. Visuals from the Shambhu border – over 200 km from Delhi – also showed the police and security personnel – already outnumbered – dropping smoke bombs from drones to disperse the farmers.
