A view of the Supreme Court in New Delhi. File | Photo Credit: Reuters   The Supreme Court on Thursday (January 15, 2026) asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) a basic question which petitioners have repeatedly posed in their challenge to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls — “Can we not safely presume that voters who have survived multiple roll revisions are citizens?” The question from the Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi came in the backdrop of discussions over a 1995 Supreme Court case law, which held that a person already enrolled in the voter list should not be asked to prove citizenship. The Lal Babu Hussain judgment saw the court declare that the burden of proof of citizenship would be only on those applying for enrollment for the first time. “The presumption or the foundation of this case [Lal Babu Hussain] is that if my name appears in the voter list, there is a presumption I am a citizen. ECI’s query not on right to decide citizenship, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that the Election Commission of India (ECI) did not say it has the right to declare anyone a citizen or non-citizen under the special intensive revision (SIR) but asked if it was within the body’s constitutional powers to conduct an inquiry on doubtful inclusions in voter rolls. The observation by the top court came while hearing arguments on petitions challenging the recently-concluded SIR in Bihar. (Jitender Gupta) The observation by the top court came while hearing arguments on petitions challenging the recently-concluded SIR in Bihar. “The ECI has neither said they have a right to declare anybody as a citizen nor do they say I have a right to declare anybody a non-citizen. But if there are inclusions in the electoral roll which are of doubtful integrity, will it not be within the ECI’s Constitutional power to conduct an enquiry which is inquisitorial in nature?” asked a bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and justice Joymalya Bagchi. The court was hearing arguments in a petition by …

David’s 25-ball 50 helped RCB post a total of 95 on the board after an embarrassing collapse that saw them lose seven wickets for just 42 runs. Despite RCB eventually losing the match, David’s knock earned him plaudits and also sparked a debate whether he should be allowed to bat higher up the order. Ahead of the second match of their double-header against PBKS on Sunday, David gave a cheeky reply after he was asked about his batting order. “Ideally, walking in at 250/0 in the 15th over would be great,” David joked. “But we got a great batting lineup. I enjoy watching them bat and try and do what I do when I get a chance. When it’s my job to do what I want to do, I just try …

This is also the first time in IPL history that CSK have lost three matches on the trot at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in the IPL. After the loss, former India player and MS Dhoni’s ex-teammate Manoj Tiwary had some blunt questions.  “From hereon CSK’s cart is going to go downhill. It seemed like that from the last three-four matches. You see the shot selection of the players, after playing form 20-25 years, you get to realise what can happen. I couldn’t understand some things. Your Purple Cap winner is Noor Ahmad, but when did he come to bowl? In the 8th over. And in the …

“Don’t Know How To Respond”: India Coach Sitanshu Kotak Loses Cool Over ‘Advantage’ Query

Just two days remain before the ICC Champions Trophy final between India and New Zealand begins in Dubai. While the Indian team arrives into the title-decider with zero defeats to their name, New Zealand’s one and only loss came against their opponents in the final. Despite the fact that India have played near-perfect cricket to reach the final, a large chunk of credit for their journey so far, is being given to the venue in Dubai. India, unlike other teams in the Champions Trophy, have played all of their matches at a single venue – the Dubai International Cricket Stadium – while others have had to fly to multiple cities. It’s this reason that has made many assert that the Indian team had an ‘undue advantage’ in comparison to others in the Champions Trophy. Team India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, however, shut down the talks in the press conference on Friday, saying it’s not like the conditions in Dubai were changed after the Champions Trophy draw was made. “I don’t understand what advantage …
