Police initiate school safety analysis using 12-point questionnaire in Kochi

The Ernakulam Rural police are reviewing student safety in schools, covering infrastructure, personal, emotional, and cyber aspects. The structural integrity of compound walls and gates, police clearance certificates of school vehicle drivers, and vehicle fitness are being reviewed. The police have collected data on safety features in around 120 of the 140 schools in the Munambam subdivision using a 12-point questionnaire. Special attention will be given to schools that report shortcomings in the survey, officers said. Schools have also been asked whether complaint boxes have been installed and whether students have been sensitised on how to use them. The questionnaire also seeks to ascertain whether school authorities have taken steps to prevent the sale of drugs and tobacco products on their premises and to regulate the use of mobile phones by students during school hours. Members of the Minority Coordination Committee (MCC) Saturday filed a complaint with the panel which is assessing the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat against a “questionnaire” that is reportedly being circulated in government-run schools asking opinions on several contentious aspects of the proposed code such as inheritance in live-in relationships, divorce, personal laws based on faith and so on, with a box on “suggestions”. Seeking a probe into the matter, MCC members stated that the “document” was found in a government primary school in Vadodara city’s Akota area and claimed that three days after several government-run schools in Naswadi taluka of Chhota Udepur district were alleged to have “coerced students to file consent” to UCC. The contentious “document” which is in Gujarati language, is titled “A Questionnaire on Uniform Civil Code- Gujarat” and is based on the form inviting individual suggestions available on the Gujarat UCC website. Govt. actively considering timelines for collection of data for proposed caste census

As the stage is being set for the commencement of the caste survey, the State government is actively considering fixing timelines for collection of data from all households across the State and its processing. The government is reportedly preparing 55-point questionnaire for ascertaining the status of households as part of the survey. The questionnaire comprises details about the family, their religion, caste (sub-caste), land holdings and their size, movable and immovable assets, including cattle, vehicles and the type of fuel utilised for cooking purposes. The first phase of the programme is likely to involve fieldwork for house listing, data processing and setting up of enumeration blocks and other pre-survey works for three weeks from the date of launch. The data collection will primarily be digital and each family will be given a printout of the questionnaire. Around 80,000 personnel are likely to be deployed for the purpose and they will be tasked with covering 80 families a day for 15 days.
