Athletes protest in J&K over ‘unfair’ sports quota job list

A decade-long freeze on the sports quota recruitment in Jammu and Kashmir had left hundreds of athletes in limbo since 2014 before a vacancy notification by the Sports Council, to fill the backlog vacancies from 2014 till 2021, ignited hope. However, the final list of athletes selected under the sports quota policy vide notification No. 02-JK (YSS) of 2026 released on June 10 earlier this month has now triggered a protest. Several athletes alleged that lower-category non-Olympic sports benefited the most from the recruitment process. Of the five gazetted posts, four were allotted to athletes from Pencak Silat, while the remaining post went to Olympian shooter Chain Singh. “We had five gazetted posts, of which four were given to a non-Olympic B category sport called Pencak Silat. How is this fair?” Afreen Hyder, an international taekwondo player from the union territory, questioned. Categorisation of sports The hierarchy laid down in the government’s own sports policy divides the disciplines into Olympic and non-Olympic categories with three subcategories A, B, C. According to the J&K Sports Council, …

Retired judge expresses concern over inordinate delay in implementing women’s quota

G. Radharani | Photo Credit: RAMAKRISHNA G Retired judge of Telangana High Court G. Radharani has expressed concern over the inordinate delay in the implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and legislative bodies. “Will the reservation for women be implemented in 2029 elections,” she questioned. She was speaking at a seminar organised by the Constitution Protection Forum here on Sunday. Justice Radharani, chairperson of the Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, said reservations for women were given in legislative assemblies in countries around the world as early as 1920. In countries like Rwanda and Congo, more than 60% of women were in legislative assemblies while it was more than 25% in European countries. “It is a matter of concern that women’s representation has not crossed 14% in our country even after so many decades of independence,” she said. This, she added, was because of the male-dominated political parties which felt that their powers would be lost by giving 33% reservation to women in Parliament and State legislatures. “They (these parties) want to link delimitation of …

Ashok. | Photo Credit: Murali Kumar K Political considerations are believed to have forced leaders from Scheduled Tribes (STs) in the ruling Congress and as well as the opposition BJP into silence over the issue of reservation, despite the Karnataka government deciding to revert to the old reservation formula with reduced quantum, from 7% to 3%. BJP that had put off a padayatra from Chitradurga to Bengaluru by senior ST leader B. Sriramulu in March, 2026, adopting what it called a “wait and watch approach” has now said they are “holding consultations with affected communities as part of efforts to build a Statewide campaign by involving them”. Shadow of tussle A senior government functionary blamed the leadership tussle in the Congress between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar for, what he called, a ‘muted response’ by the Congress. Nayaka leaders — PWD Minister Satish Jharkiholi and former Minister K.N. Rajanna …

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia says KSCA demanded tickets “far beyond” permitted quota

2 min readUpdated: May 8, 2026 10:19 PM IST The IPL 2026 final will be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 31. When the BCCI announced the playoffs schedule earlier, it offered only a brief explanation for dropping Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium — home of defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru — as the final venue. “Owing to certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols, the venue has been shifted and reassigned,” the board’s statement read. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has now told Sportstar what those requirements were. “As per IPL protocol, we are required to provide only 15 per cent of the total seating capacity as complimentary tickets to the host association. This constitutes the standard protocol; all host state associations receive a 15 per cent allocation of their total capacity in the form of complimentary tickets,” he said. The Karnataka State Cricket Association, he claimed, sought considerably more. “That was much beyond the allocated 15 per cent.” “We wrote …

UAE left OPEC due to low size of oil quota, says former envoy Navdeep Suri

And they had said that if the quota is not raised, they might consider leaving.” Disclaimer: We do not own any of the content, ideas, images, or text presented here.
