IMD warns of torrential rain, thunderstorms across several states today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert warning of torrential rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across several states on Monday as the southwest monsoon remains active over large parts of the country. According to the latest IMD bulletin, the next 14 hours are expected to be particularly critical, with heavy rain and severe weather likely to affect several regions. IMD warns of heavy rain and strong winds The weather department said wind speeds could reach up to 80 kmph in some areas, increasing the risk of uprooted trees, power outages, traffic disruptions and waterlogging in low-lying areas. The IMD has advised farmers, travellers and people living near rivers and coastal regions to remain vigilant. Residents in hilly states have also been warned about the possibility of landslides and sudden rises in river water levels due to persistent rainfall. The warning comes a day after incessant rainfall led to severe waterlogging in parts of Mumbai. The city recorded over 200 mm of rainfall within ten hours. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) area received exceptionally heavy downpour between 8:00 am on July 4, 2026, and 7:00 am on July 5, 2026, with the eastern suburbs recording the highest overall rainfall, at 250 mm. According to IMD’s forecast, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected till 11.30 am in the National Capital Region (NCR). While Safdarjung reported moderate rainfall of 9.1 mm, other stations saw light to moderate showers —Palam (11.3 mm), Lodhi Road (6.8 mm), Pusa (5.5 mm), Ayanagar (4.9 mm), Ridge (1.8 mm), Pitampura (1.5 mm), and Narela (1 mm). IMD Weather update: The IMD has predicted heavy rains for West Bengal and Odisha as a low-pressure area formed over the north Bay of Bengal on Friday. The weather office said under the influence of the weather system, heavy rainfall is likely to occur in the sub-Himalayan districts till Saturday, with the possibility of very heavy rain at one or two places. The low-pressure system is expected to cause heavy downpour in the south Bengal districts on Friday, the Met Department said. Landslides may also be triggered by heavy rain in the hill districts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, it said.
