Mr. Meena’s charge caused a commotion in the State Assembly last week. Admitting that he had made a “mistake,” Mr. Meena did not disclose the contents of his response. “I have submitted my reply for the mistake I made. The mistake is mentioned in the notice given by the party’s State president,” Mr. Meena told journalists here. Mr. Meena, whose resignation from the State Cabinet tendered in June 2024 is yet to be accepted, said disciplinary action over his allegation was an internal matter of the BJP. “It is not for me or any minister or even the Chief Minister to speak on the matter. However, Meena claimed ignorance about it and asserted that he was the party’s “disciplined soldier” and would send his reply within the stipulated time once he received the notice. Meena made the statement during a public meeting after which the opposition Congress had raised the issue in the Rajasthan Assembly, causing embarrassment to the BJP government. Raking the issue, Congress had demanded Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma’s resignation. Leader of the Opposition Tika Ram Jully did not even give a speech on the Governor’s address in protest. Congress MLAs kept raising slogans during the chief minister’s speech. In the show cause notice, the BJP said Meena’s statement tarnished the government’s reputation. “You are a member of the BJP and have been elected MLA from Sawai Madhopur region on the party ticket. In Rajasthan, BJP mandal polls hang fire amid infighting, delay state chief selection | Political Pulse News

The BJP’s ongoing organisational polls have been delayed in the party-ruled Rajasthan, where the elections of one-third of the mandal presidents have still not taken place due to tussle between various party factions to get their nominees chosen. This has made a cascading impact on the elections of the BJP’s district committee chiefs and that of the state party chief as they have also got delayed. According to the BJP’s constitution, the state party chief can only be elected after at least 50% of the district presidents are named. Similarly, the district president can be elected only following the appointment of at least 50% of the mandal presidents. BJP sources said the party leadership has now directed its Rajasthan unit to complete the process of naming all mandal chiefs to be followed by the appointment of the district presidents. The election of the state party president was to take place on 30 December last year with the mandal and district committees supposed to be in place by November 30 and December 15 respectively, as per …

Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma | Tackling teething troubles

A political life has a way of bringing a measure to things. If not in a starkly spartan way, Bhajan Lal Sharma retains that good country feel to his daily rhythms: up at sunrise, a brief stroll in the sprawling lawns where the two cows he keeps are always indulged with a spot of patrician patting, and then a busy day interspersed with simple, home-cooked vegetarian meals. A calendar bustling with meetings means he often ends up skipping—or delaying—his early dinner. His demeanour, though, is not devoid of rosy reminders of his carefree, younger days when he was fond of eating—he even won a bet once by consuming over two dozen laddoos at a wedding feast without any water in between. In December 2023, no one would have grudged him a few extra sweets when his name was called out, tambola-style, in the game of chance that decided Rajasthan’s chief ministership. He was nowhere in the race: a first-time legislator, he was being pitchforked from near-anonymity to high office. But from that moment of elation, …

The BJP, he said, is also committed to fulfilling all the promises made to the people. “The track record of Modi ji‘s politics has been fabulous. And it was fabulous because we treat people as supreme whereas the Congress treats a family supreme,” the senior BJP leader said addressing a public meeting in support of BJP candidate Arjun Ram Meghwal in Kolayat in Bikaner. The Defence Minister said he is pained when the Congress questions the power and valour of the country’s defence forces. “The Congress questions our Army personnel. They ask for proof that they have carried out surgical strike. The whole world has got the proof, only the Congress is not getting it,” he …

Poll-bound Rajasthan | Welfare state

Amidst a pre-election frenzy of welfare schemes and freebies, the Gehlot regime also enacts a couple of first-in-India bills FOURTH TERM IN MIND: CM Ashok Gehlot distributing social security pension in Sikar. ISSUE DATE: Aug 21, 2023 | UPDATED: Aug 11, 2023 16:13 IST Ascribe it to a genuine feel for the people or to plain shrewdness, but Ashok Gehlot has made social welfare a consistent focus of his administration. A special urgency to tend to the general weal seems to grip the Rajasthan chief minister especially before elections—a time such as now. Whether born of principle or exigency, this bent continues to give Rajasthan some pioneering policy moments. Back in 2011, during his second term, the Free Medicine Scheme was one such. More than an unthinking handout, it was an intervention that answered to a historical need, at a time when increasingly privatised healthcare was bleeding the mass of immiserated citizenry. Crafted around the procurement of generic medicines, it helped break the tyranny of huge mark-ups on branded drugs. Now, the budget session of …
