Culprits must be punished – India TV

Culprits must be punished – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma. The inhuman torture meted out to First Year freshers at the Kottayam Govt Nursing College by five senior students in the guise of ragging, is not only a horrendous crime but a sin, a blot on humanity. The matter could have been kept under wraps by the culprits and their patrons, had a video of the despicable act not made the rounds. When I was shown the video, the blood-curdling screams of the victims moved me, to say the least. The prohibition of the Ragging Act has been in force in India since 2011. It was enacted to curb the menace of ragging in all educational institutions. The punishment for ragging includes imprisonment for up to two years and a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or both. Students, at the time of admission, are supposed to submit affidavits promising not to resort to ragging.  In Kottayam district of Kerala, the acts of ragging took place inside the Govt Nursing College men’s hostel. The hands …

Deepfake: Merchants of loot – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing an august gathering of titans from the IT industry at the AI Action Summit in Paris as co-host, highlighted the immense potential of artificial intelligence for transforming lives, but at the same time cautioned about the inherent risks involved. Modi said AI can transform the lives of millions through improvement in health, education and agriculture. At the same time, he said, “We must address concerns related to cybersecurity, disinformation and deepfakes, and we must also ensure that technology is rooted in local ecosystems for it to be effective and useful.” Prime Minister Modi is right. There are immense possibilities with AI, and at the same time, AI has some major negative side-effects as well. AI is being misused to make deepfake videos to misguide people by superimposing images and voices of celebrities. The aim of such people engaged in nefarious activities is to market spurious products and services and mint money using the face and voice of celebrities. …

Mallikarjun Kharge should go and take a dip – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma. At a time when millions of devouts are taking a holy dip at the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and invisible Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj on the auspicious occasion of Maha Kumbh, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stirred a hornets’ nest by telling a rally at Dr BR Ambedkar’s birthplace in Mhow, MP, that ” a dip in Ganga won’t end poverty”.    With Rahul Gandhi sitting on the dais and listening, Kharge said: “Will a holy dip in Maa Ganga remove poverty? Will a dip in Ganga make people happy and improve governance in our country? I do not understand why these people compete among themselves in spending money and taking a dip in the Ganga.” Kharge said, “I do not intend to hurt the sentiments of people, but I would like to apologize if anyone’s feelings are hurt.  But tell me, what good is it going to do? When children are starving, unable to attend schools, people are competing with one another to …

Yogi Adityanath at his vintage best on Hindutva and riots – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday did not mince words in the Assembly, when he  said, ” Chanting of ‘Jai Sri Ram’  is neither communal, nor provocative, but a symbol of faith.” He said, “People in India often greet each other with ‘Ram Ram’, and even during the funeral procession, ‘Ram Naam Satya Hai’ is chanted. Nothing can happen in India without Ram. Then how can you (opposition) call ‘Jai Sri Ram’ slogan communal?” This was vintage Yogi at his best. He raised a basic question. “If a Muharram procession can pass through any locality peacefully, then why can’t a Ramnavami or Hanuman Jayanti procession or idol immersion procession pass through a Muslim locality in peace? It is the duty of the government to provide security to all irrespective of religion. But if people start throwing stones, then it is also the responsibility of our government to catch every stone thrower and give punishment.”   Yogi said, “India shall be run by the ideals …

The suicide of a 34-year-old Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, harassed by his wife and in-laws in legal tangles, has caused pain to millions of people. Atul left behind a 24-page suicide note and an 81-minute video before he committed suicide. In his emotional suicide note, Atul wrote, “Don’t do my ‘Asthi Visarjan’ till my harassers get punished. If the court decides that my wife and other harassers are not guilty, then pour my ashes into some gutter outside the court.” He further wrote, “There shall be no negotiations, settlements and mediations with these evil people and the culprits must be punished. My wife should not be allowed to withdraw cases to escape punishment unless she explicitly accepts that she has filed false cases.” The techie uploaded his video on the internet titled, “This ATM is closed permanently. Challenge to Sharif – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Tehreek-i-Insaf on Tuesday night called off its protests in Islamabad after the Army launched a midnight crackdown on his supporters. Hundreds of supporters have been rounded up. On Tuesday, jailed former PM Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi led a convoy of vehicles carrying thousands of supporters, who were engaged in pitched battles with security forces. Several persons were reportedly killed in violence and the Army had to take over control of key installations in Islamabad. Imran Khan, presently incarcerated in a jail in Rawalpindi, had given a call to “break the shackles of slavery” to his supporters. In a message to the people, he asked them to choose between Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor who surrendered and died in Rangoon in British custody, and Tipu Sultan of Mysore, who died fighting the British. Imran Khan had entrusted his wife Bushra Bibi the responsibility of conveying his message to the people. PTI’s demand is that Imran Khan should …

How to say ‘TATA’ to the ‘RATAN’ of India? – India TV

How to say ‘TATA’ to the ‘RATAN’ of India? – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV ‘Aaj Ki Baat’ with Rajat Sharma With the passing away of Ratan Tata and the appointment of Noel Tata, aged 67 as chairman of Tata Trusts, the over $ 100 billion Tata group has undergone a major changeover. The nation mourned the death of the patriarch, as corporate chieftains, top political leaders and celebrities came to pay their last respects in Mumbai. Under Ratan Tata, the group rose from a turnover of $4 billion to over $100 billion in 21 years. From salt, tea and coffee to air conditioners, cars, trucks, airlines, hotels, hospitals, steel and telecom, one can find the Tata group omnipresent in the everyday life of each Indian. Ratan Tata was not merely a businessman or the patriarch of the group. He was an institution. He was the ideal industrialist, an inspiration for youths and a blessing for the poor. It was he who brought the Tata group into the international automobile sector, gave the Indian middle class a dream to own a car. Ratan Tata owned …

Pakistan, Congress and Article 370 ! – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV India TV Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif’s remarks that “Pakistan and National Conference-Congress alliance are on the same page on restoring Articles 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir” has stirred a hornet’s nest in the ongoing assembly polls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lashed out at the alliance saying,  “Congress and NC want to implement Pakistan’s agenda in Jammu and Kashmir, but no power on earth can bring back Article 370.”  One may ask why PM Modi raised the Pakistan-Congress connection issue. It is not that he wants to give importance to Pakistan in Kashmir elections, but he wants to expose the Congress on the issue of Article 370.  While National Conference has promised to bring back Article 370 in J&K, Congress has consciously tried to avoid any mention of this ticklish issue. There is no mention about restoration of Article 370 in the Congress manifesto for J&K. This issue has vanished from the election speeches of Congress leaders.  One must recall that the Congress …

One Nation, One Election: What’s the game? – India TV

Image Source : INDIA TV India TV Editor-in-Chief Rajat Sharma When the first general elections in India were held in 1951, after our nation became a republic, both Lok Sabha and assembly elections were held simultaneously. The ‘One Nation, One Election’ idea is not new. Probably, the makers of the Constitution had no premonitions about break-up of political parties, leaders changing parties, governments collapsing, followed by mid-term elections. The reality now is: governments at the Centre and states collapsed so many times and subsequently elections were held. We have now arrived at a situation where assembly elections are held in states after gaps of almost every six months. Because of frequent holding of elections, neither the Centre nor the state governments can undertake reforms and take hard decisions, out of fear that they might lose their vote banks, or face dissatisfaction from voters. The idea of holding simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections is a good one, but it may be difficult to implement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intentions may be bonafide, but it has now …
