Badminton Asia Championship: Frustrating losses for Sindhu, Kiran George and Priyanshu Rajawat | Badminton News

Of India’s singles lot at the Badminton Asia Championship, Kiran George probably raised the most hopes. Though PV Sindhu dragged Akane Yamaguchi to three sets at Ningbo, China, and announced her intent to stay on the hamster wheel, till she could sneak out a Top 10 scalp or two and hit the next gear. But frustration was the theme of India’s remaining singles in the Round of 16 as none managed to make the quarterfinals. Indian singles hasn’t really had anything to celebrate since HS Prannoy’s World Championship bronze in 2023 and Lakshya Sen’s Olympic semifinals. But Thursday was particularly aggravating for Indian reactions to routine swatting aside by Top 10 opponents. Prannoy and Lakshya Sen had lost on Day 1. The fight has gone out of Indian singles, and neither Sindhu’s flickering aggression as she struck the shuttle high to push the pace, nor Kiran’s persistent and consistency undone at the finish almost casually by Kunlavut Vitidsarn, offered any hope of things improving for India. The Sudirman Cup incoming storm looks ominous, with the …

India Open Super 750: Lakshya Sen, Priyanshu Rajawat, HS Prannoy bow out in round one as giddy days of men’s singles feel distant | Badminton News

It wasn’t too long ago that Priyanshu Rajawat stood at the center of the top podium spot in Bangkok as the new kid on the block, lifting the famous Thomas Cup trophy. Standing alongside, among others, were the leaders Srikanth Kidambi and HS Prannoy, and the next big thing, Lakshya Sen. Two young men with a lot of promise, two veterans who pulled the team through in tough situations. The triumph was perhaps an achievement that hasn’t received its due credit, but it was an incredible high for Indian badminton. To be World Champions in the most prestigious team event. Just under 1000 days from then, none of those singles players have managed to get past the first round at the India Open Super 750. On Wednesday, Priyanshu and Prannoy lost in three games while Lakshya looked well off the pace in a straight-games defeat. And Srikanth isn’t ranked high enough to enter the main draw of these events anymore and pulled out on Tuesday despite getting a late call-up. On a cold, foggy day …

Syed Modi Super 300 Badminton: Priyanshu Rajawat has high ambitions, but body and mind must align more often | Badminton News

When about his grand plans for the future, Priyanshu Rajawat takes a couple of seconds to ponder, before replying that he hopes to be world No 1 one day (breaking into the top 20 is his immediate target). Tell him that his game style often elicits comparisons with Srikanth Kidambi, he nods in agreement with a smile. To get to where Srikanth did once, the youngster knows that taking care of his body is key, but also figuring out how to cut down on his mistakes. On Saturday, Priyanshu went down for the second straight year at the semifinals stage of the Syed Modi India International, as Singapore’s Jason Teh Jia Heng won 21-13, 21-19 in 48 minutes. While Lakshya Sen dominated his semifinal against Japanese Shogo Ogawa 21-8, 21-14, the potential blockbuster final between him and Priyanshu wouldn’t happen now. After his quarterfinal win, Priyanshu said that he had put in a lot of work for the Syed Modi event this year because he wanted a title at the home event. He was also …

Sindhu needs more efficiency, Srikkanth more endurance, Lakshya Sen and Rajawat wilt against better players, and Indians need more ambition: Agus Santoso’s prescription | Badminton News

Where 59-year-old badminton coach Agus Dwi Santoso comes from in Malang, Indonesia, there is a famous water park with a highlight joy-ride called ‘Tsunami’. Agus guided top names in India like PV Sindhu, B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth, and coached the elite in Indonesia, Korea and Thailand. He restates the philosophy followed by Pullela Gopichand in India, when HS Prannoy peaked in 2023, and bought into by Lakshya Sen, which is also a favourite with other Indonesian coaches like Mulyo Handoyo. He repeats it like a grandpa’s tale. “In badminton training, you can reach 80-90% of physical potential, before the body tells the brain, ‘Enough’. But winning and losing in a tournament is decided on that last 10% after you are tired. It’s like fleeing an approaching tsunami by running fast, and having no choice but to climb a coconut tree high enough if you don’t want to die. But where will the energy come from for the last 10%?” he says. “Indian players have to work on that 10% and push themselves,” he …

Priyanshu Rajawat suffers straight-game defeat, ousted in 1st round

Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat faced his second consecutive first-round exit, losing in straight games to Brian Yang of Canada at the China Open in Changzhou on Tuesday. Priyanshu, who was ousted by Takuma Obayashi in the first round of the Hong Kong Open last week, lost 13-21, 16-21 in just 36 minutes against Yang. World No. 24 Yang asserted his dominance from the outset, winning five consecutive points in the opening game, while Priyanshu could only manage two. The Canadian player maintained control throughout the second game as well, with Priyanshu struggling to counter Yang’s precise placements. Yang’s wide reach and ability to dictate the pace also made it difficult for Priyanshu to gain a foothold in the match Yang’s defensive prowess was on full display, winning 42 rallies compared to Priyanshu’s 29. This loss is a significant setback for India, as Priyanshu was considered one of the country’s top contenders in the tournament. Can Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat own the baton-passing moment at Thomas Cup? | Badminton News

It wasn’t necessarily the ‘India-effect’, but most Thomas Cup teams at this 2024 edition, are hitting badminton’s team World Cup starting April 27, with bolstered second and third singles players. India, the defending champions, after a gloriously dreamy title march from 2022, though, might have laid down the chuckling blueprint for success that’s possible only from the quality of depth that India possessed in the form of Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy in nicking the MS2 and MS3 rubbers two summers ago. Though Prannoy as India’s No 1 is likely to be rotated and Srikanth will likely get alternated too, this Thomas Cup is the sternest test of big-screen temperament for designated Nos 2 and 3, Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat. Now that India has totally bought into the significance of team events, and is fielding a full-fledged challenge, the pair of under24s in Sen and Rajawat, have their task cut out. Even in the 2022 edition, the MS1, Sen, had a wretched run right upto the finals owing to illness. Though he was masterly …

Swiss Open badminton: Priyanshu Rajawat uses his phenomenal pace to seal quarters berth | Badminton News

Priyanshu Rajawat has been like a blur on the badminton courts of Basel these last two days. Picked out by Pullela Gopichand at a scouting camp in Madhya Pradesh well before he turned 10, and solely for his foot and hand-speed, the 22-year-old from Dhar is making his sheer pace count. On Thursday, he packed off Chinese Lan Xi Lei 21-14, 21-13 to make the Swiss Open quarterfinals. But the youngster, known for his conventional stick smashes, has been increasingly using the cross-angles on the backhand, with whiplash speed, to hurry opponents. Indonesian Anthony Ginting arrived on the scene a decade ago, and everyone was talking about his incredible speed. Loh Kean Yew even went on to win a World Championship title with freakish pace on his court movements. The Singaporean has mellowed down a tad, and Ginting doesn’t need to rely just on speed. So Rajawat has taken over the mantle of a streaking, dashing, whizzing bullet game on the circuit with a breathless repertoire of shots. Of particular blink-and-miss significance is his inverted …

Indonesia Masters: Lakshya Sen, Priyanshu Rajawat Bow Out Of Men’s Singles Competition

File photo of Lakshya Sen.© AFP India’s Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat suffered straight-game defeats in their respective pre-quarterfinal matches to crash out of the men’s singles competition of the Indonesia Masters, a BWF World Tour Super 500 tournament in Jakarta on Thursday. Taking on eighth-seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark, Sen came up with a strong fight but went down 19-21 18-21. He had beaten Weng Hongyang of China in the opening round 24-22 21-15. Rajawat was up against Brian Yang of Canada after his conquest over Rasmus Gemke of Denmark in the first round 21-18 21-19. Although Rajawat produced a great show in the opening game against the Canadian, it wasn’t enough as he lost 18-21 14-21 to bow out of the competition. Kiran George now remains the lone Indian in the tournament as he takes on Lu Guangzu of China later in the day in the men’s singles event. He is coming off a win over Toma Junior Popov of France in the opening round 18-21 21-16 21-19. (Except for the …
