India Open badminton: Close friends Anupama Upadhyaya & Rakshitha Ramraj keen to take the next step on big circuit | Badminton News

“I couldn’t play hard smashes because she returned everything,” Rakshitha Sree Santosh Ramraj burst out smiling, speaking about Anupama Upadhyaya, her opponent on the day. “By the time she hit 20 strokes, I was tired. I had back pain for the past month and started playing only a week ago. My stamina was zero, and this girl knew it!” More hearty laughter. “And she made me do the tosses!” “Come on! Don’t say that. The court was damn slow!” Anupama chimed in, defending as well as she did on court. “How can I hit smashes at you? You’ll convert it, and then I will have to run more… Everyone is playing only rallies here.” But Rakshitha was having none of it: “But you know I was injured!” They emerged from the playing area after a hard-fought, sometimes scrappy, first-round match at the India Open on Wednesday, still sweating profusely after their 43-minute battle. Anupama, 19, had gotten the better of Rakshitha, 17, in the all-Indian clash 21-17, 21-18. But as they started speaking to the …

From a pre-teen chess player to an early teen cricketer, we take a look at who can make their mark in the coming years. The quiet state of Indian badminton in the south – Tamil Nadu – with its self-effacing players, could start roaring this season with Rithvik Sanjeevi Satish Kumar picking some clutch wins at the end of 2024. But the hidden talent that could see some breakthrough results in coming months is Coimbatore teen Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj, a rally player who’s switched gears and is learning to let it rip. She is 5 ‘6 ” at age 17, with a natural inclination to keep the rally going, but blessed with a good punch from the back-court. Encouraged by her father to start out in the sport at 9, she made the move to Hyderabad pretty early, with her mom accompanying her. It was a tough two years as Covid struck within weeks of …

Rakshitha Sree upsets second-seed Kirsty Gilmour

Indian shuttlers had a brilliant day at the Hylo Open Super 300 tournament winning most of the round of 16 games. The biggest surprise of the day came as young Indian shuttler Rakshitha Ramraj stunned second-seeded Kirsty Gilmour to move to the quarter-finals. Malvika Bansod, Ayush Shetty, and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran also woh their respective matches. Rakshitha played a dominating game against second-seeded and world number 25 Gilmour to defeat her in 35 minutes. The first game started evenly and both players were tied at 4-4 but then Rakshitha accelerated with some good strokeplay and took a lead of 12-6. There was no looking back for the youngster afterwards and won the first game 21-14. In the second game, Rakshitha was more confident and took an early lead of 9-2. There was no coming back for Gilmour as the young Indian shuttler closed the game at 21-12 registering a famous win. Hylo Open badminton: Rakshitha Sree, with more emphasis on attack and aggression, produces a big win against world No 25 Gilmour | Badminton News

The instructions to Rakshitha Sree Santhosh Ramraj on match eve were clear: whether she was leading 20-10 or trailing 1-20, she was to pump her fist and shout at every point she snatched. “If you don’t remind her, she plays a silent game which doesn’t make sense on the international circuit. Gopi Sir called yesterday and strictly told us to follow that – no matter what the match situation, Shout,” coach Rahul Yadav says. Aggression was being systematically drilled into another talent on the Hyderabad courts, 8 years after PV Sindhu was taught to match her attack with voluble aggression. On Thursday, Rakshitha matched the hop-smashes of Scottish Kirsty Gilmour, beating the No 25 player 21-14, 21-12 in 36 minutes at the Hylo Open, in Saarbrucken Germany. It will be preposterous to make a direct comparison with Sindhu who had a World Championship bronze at 18 years. But Rakshitha’s rangy game, being honed at the Gopichand Academy, is very reminiscent of Sindhu’s. Rakshitha has a long way to go – she is still World No …
