The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) approached the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday to seek permission to hold a Ram Navami procession in Bankura’s Saltora, on allegations that police did not give them permission. UP Bans Meat Sale Near Religious Places For Navratri, Entirely For Ram Navami

Lucknow: The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has banned the sale of meat within 500 metres of religious places in the state for the nine-day Chaitra Navratri festival, which begins on Sunday, and directed that all illegal slaughterhouses be closed.  Issuing special instructions for Ram Navami, which will be celebrated on April 6, the government said there will be a complete ban on the sale of meat throughout the state.  Amrit Abhijat, principal secretary of the Urban Development Department of Uttar Pradesh, has directed all district magistrates, police commissioners and municipal commissioners to immediately close illegal slaughterhouses and enforce the ban on the sale of meat near religious places. Special district-level committees will be formed to ensure that the ban is effective and monitoring will be done by officials from the police, health, transport and food safety departments. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city in view of the agitations against Aurangzeb’s tomb and to maintain law and order during the upcoming festivals, officials said on Monday. Police Commissioner Pravin Pawar has imposed the prohibitory orders, to be in force from March 25 to April 8, an official said. Notably, several right-wing organisations have been demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb located at Khultabad in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Karnataka, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu will also have public holidays in their states. Kolkata: The state-run Jadavpur University in Kolkata on Wednesday withdrew the permission it gave to RSS-affiliated ABVP to celebrate Ram Navami on the campus amid protests by Left-backed students’ organisations. The varsity had given the permission to celebrate Ram Navami near Gate 3 from 11 am to 2 pm, they said. In a notice, Registrar Snehamanju Basu said written complaints were received from different groups of students that such a programme may lead to disruption of peace and harmony on the campus. In view of that, the ‘no-objection’ was being withdrawn, the notice said. The notice also cited a letter from the Higher Education Department that flagged the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which is in place for the Lok Sabha polls, and for “safeguarding the right of every individual for peaceful and undisturbed home life”.
