NCP-SCP leader Sharad Pawar and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale were among 19 new Rajya Sabha members who took oath here on Monday. The oath was taken in the presence of Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan. Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju were present during the ceremony in the Rajya Sabha chamber, reported PTI. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Sunday opposed the Maharashtra government`s move to draft a law to stop “love jihad”. “Love jihad” is a term used by right-wing outfits to allege conspiracy by Muslim men to convert Hindu women through marriage. The Maharashtra government has issued a Government Resolution (GR) stating that a committee headed by the director general of police (DGP) will suggest steps to tackle complaints of “love jihad” and forced conversions. It will also look at legal aspects and the laws framed in other states and recommend legislation to prevent such instances. “It is wrong to call interfaith unions as love jihad. There should be a provision to prevent conversions. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale on Sunday said his party Republican Party of India (RPI-A), an ally in the ruling Mahayuti, should get to contest on at least 10 to 12 seats in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections 2024, reported the PTI. Addressing a press conference in Maharashtra`s Nagpur, Ramdas Athawale said the RPI-A will contest the election on its party symbol and ask for three to four seats in Vidarbha, including north Nagpur, Umred (Nagpur), Umarkhed in Yavatmal and Washim. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale`s car was reportedly involved in an accident on Thursday inside the Khambatki tunnel on the Satara-Mumbai highway in Maharashtra due to a pile-up of vehicles, according to the police, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, the minister and his wife, who were in the car, did not suffer any injuries in the incident that took place around 6 pm, said a police official from Satara. The Dalit leader, who heads the Republican Party of India (Athawale), was returning to Mumbai after attending a programme in Panchgani in Satara district at the time, he said, as per the PTI. A vehicle had a flat tyre inside the tunnel. As the driver attempted to change it, another car rammed into it, triggering a pile-up involving many other trailing vehicles, he said.
