Rameshwaram fishermen capture mechanised boat from Puducherry`s Karaikal

Rameshwaram fishermen capture mechanised boat from Puducherry`s Karaikal

Tension erupted at Rameshwaram fishing port on Thursday after local fishermen captured a mechanised fishing boat from Karaikal, Puducherry late on Thursday night near the Dhanushkodi coast. Fishermen alleged that mechanised boats operating from Karaikal are fishing close to the coast instead of in deep-sea areas. They claim that these boats are catching large quantities of fish, severely affecting the livelihoods of country boat and motorboat fishermen in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. In addition to depleting marine resources, the Karaikal-based fishermen are reportedly using deep-sea fishing nets in Sri Lankan waters. This has resulted in damage to fishing gear, including nets belonging to Sri Lankan fishermen. Following complaints from Sri Lankan fishermen, the Sri Lankan government has been seizing Indian fishing boats through the Sri Lankan Navy. Rameswaram fishermen have been the worst affected by these seizures. Despite repeated complaints from Tamil Nadu fishermen, Karaikal fishermen allegedly continue such fishing practices, further threatening the livelihoods of coastal communities. Amid this situation, Rameswaram fishermen intercepted a Karaikal fishing boat that was fishing near the …

The Pamban bridge, India’s first vertical lift railway sea bridge, is set to be inaugurated in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, in March, marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure. This modern marvel replaces the British-era Pamban Railway Bridge, which was commissioned in 1914 and featured a manually operated horizontal opening mechanism to facilitate ship movement. With rail services from the Indian mainland to Rameswaram island expected to resume by March, R Srinivasan, Senior Deputy General Manager at Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), Chennai, in an interview with Sweety Adimulam of The Indian Express, spoke about the significance of the bridge and the challenges faced during its construction. Tamil Nadu To Get India’s 1st Vertical Lift Sea Bridge Soon

Chennai: India’s first vertical lift sea bridge at Pamban in southern Tamil Nadu will be opened in January to restore rail connectivity to Rameswaram island from the country’s mainland.  The 2.08-km-long bridge, constructed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), is expected to allow the Indian Railways to operate trains at a higher speed. It has been built parallel to an existing bridge that was constructed by the British and is believed to be 110 years old.  Officials said that unlike the heritage structure, the girders from each side of the new bridge will open up like a butterfly to allow ships and other vessels to pass through. A lift span, which is 72.5-metres long, 16 metres wide and weighs 550 tonnes, can be lifted up automatically up to 17 metres.  Although the Commissioner for Railway Safety has given his nod to run trains on the bridge, he has flagged key concerns, including inadequate measures to check corrosion and deviation from the girder’s original design.  However, authorities said the concerns are being addressed. “We have …
