The Mumbai selection committee has dropped opener Prithvi Shaw for the next Ranji Trophy game due to poor fitness. Mumbai is scheduled to travel to Agartala to play Tripura from October 26 to 29. The Indian Express understands that Prithvi Shaw has been asked by selectors to follow two weeks of a fitness programme prepared by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) trainers. Prithvi Shaw’s four innings in the two Ranji Trophy games so far have yielded 7,12, 1 and 39 not out respectively. The team management has informed MCA that Prithvi Shaw’s body contains 35 percent fat and he needs rigorous training before he gets back into the side. “He has been dropped, and needs to go back to training and shed some body weight to be considered for selection,” an MCA official said. A four-day gap instead of three between Ranji Trophy games to help players manage workload better with the tournament to be played in two phases to reduce weather-related disruptions because of fog during the winter in north India. Elimination of the toss with the visiting team given the choice to either bat or bowl in the Under-23 CK Nayudu Trophy and awarding of points based on number of runs scored and wickets taken. If the points-system experiment in the age-group competition is a success, the same will be implemented in Ranji Trophy from the 2025-26 season to give an incentive to teams to go for outright wins. These suggestions were put forward by the Cricket Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, said as per the practice, the suggestions of the Cricket Committee will be placed before the Apex Council for approval.
