Ranji Trophy Quarter-Finals: MD Nidheesh, Anshul Kamboj, Chintan Gaja Shine On Opening Day

The opening day of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals saw a dominant display of bowling across four matches on Saturday. Kerala pacer MD Nidheesh bagged a five-wicket haul to restrict Jammu & Kashmir to 228/8 at stumps at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Kerala won the toss and invited J&K to bat first. The batting side had a poor start as Nidheesh removed the top three in the opening session to leave the side reeling at 48/3. However, Kanhaiya Wadhawan first stitched a brief 19-run partnership with captain Paras Dogra, who was removed by Basil Thampi, before adding a 55-run stand with Sahil Lotra. Wadhawan departed after scoring 48 as Nidheesh got his fourth wicket of the day. Lotra and Lone Nasir steered J&K’s innings further and took them to over 150-run mark. The former played a gritty knock of 35 off 125 balls before losing his wicket to Aditya Sarwate. In the final session of the day, Nidheesh completed his five-wicket haul with the scalp of Nasir, who made a vital contribution of …

Once again, fans turned up in huge numbers at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to watch the hometown hero, with hopes that he would dazzle on the crease. However, to the disappointment of all the fans, Kohli’s time on the crease lasted for just 15 deliveries. After seeing off a couple of deliveries, Kohli eventually found a hang of it. He executed a perfect straight drive on the 14th delivery to find the boundary rope, sending the entire crowd into a frenzy. On the next ball, Himanshu Sangwan produced a perfect inswinger to beat Kohli’s blade, sending his off-stump cartwheeling in the air. Kohli had to return to the dugout with a mere score of six. In the aftermath of Kohli’s dismissal, Irfan took to X and dropped a cryptic message, highlighting a modern-day cricketer’s job to play cricket year-round, not to train for 10 months and play …

KL Rahul Falls For 26 On Ranji Trophy Comeback; Karnataka 267/5 vs Haryana In Must-Win Match

KL Rahul’s much-anticipated return to Ranji Trophy lasted a mere 37 balls as the India opener was dismissed for 26, leaving Karnataka at 267/5 against Haryana on day one of their must-win Group C match in Bengaluru on Thursday. Making his first Ranji Trophy appearance since February 2020, local hero Rahul walked in at No. 3 to a warm reception from the semi-packed M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, with chants of ‘Rahul, Rahul’ echoing through the stands. The stylish right-hander looked in fine touch from the outset, striking four crisp boundaries in a fluent 54-run stand with Karnataka skipper Mayank Agarwal for the second wicket. However, just as he appeared to settle down, Rahul fell in the post-lunch session to Haryana’s in-form pacer Anshul Kamboj. The leading wicket-taker for Haryana this season produced a peach of a delivery that forced the experienced India batter into an edge, with wicketkeeper Rohit Sharma making no mistake behind the stumps. The Haryana pace spearhead was once again the pick of the bowler as he dismissed opener KV Avneesh …

Riyan Parag Returns To Lead Assam In Ranji Trophy Match Against Saurashtra

Riyan Parag Returns To Lead Assam In Ranji Trophy Match Against Saurashtra

Riyan Parag has been declared fit to return for Assam in the seventh round of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, starting January 30. The 23-year-old will captain Assam in their final league match against Saurashtra in Rajkot. Parag’s last competitive appearance was in the third T20I against Bangladesh in Hyderabad in October 2024. Since then, he has been sidelined by a shoulder injury that required surgery, which ruled him out of the T20I series in South Africa, the ongoing series against England, and India’s Champions Trophy squad. However, his return to action could help him regain match fitness should India need him as a replacement in the near future. Having played ten T20Is for India since his debut against Zimbabwe in July 2024, Parag is known for his explosive batting and handy quick-spin bowling. Before his injury, his all-round skills added valuable depth to India’s lineup. In the previous Ranji Trophy season, Parag showcased his prowess with the bat, amassing 378 runs in six innings at an impressive average of 75.60 and a …

Shardul Thakur: When Someone Has Quality, He Should Be Given More Chances

Despite getting overlooked for the all-rounder’s role in the Indian Test side, Shardul Thakur on Thursday asserted that a player should be considered for selection if he has “quality” after producing another rearguard act to save Mumbai some blushes in the Ranji Trophy in Mumbai on Thursday. The 33-year-old Thakur came to Mumbai’s rescue once again with the bat, smacking five fours and two sixes to make 51 off 57 balls and dragging them to 120 all out from a precarious 47/7 against Jammu and Kashmir. Thakur’s exploits here at the BKC Ground served a reminder of his maiden First-Class ton in the Ranji Trophy semifinal last season, when he smacked a 105-ball 109 with 13 fours and four sixes coming in at No. 9. His century took Mumbai from 106 for seven to 378 against Tamil Nadu to set up a win by an innings and 70 runs en route to their 43rd title. “What can I talk about my quality? Others should talk about it. They should see that if someone …

As Rohit Sharma Hits 19-Year Low With Ranji Trophy Failure, Frustrated Fans Leave Stadium

India Test captain Rohit Sharma’s poor form with the bat continued even in domestic cricket. Making a return to Ranji Trophy on Thursday after almost a decade, Rohit failed to shine as he was dismissed for just 3 runs on the opening day of Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir at the MCA Cricket Ground. The right-handed batter faced 19 deliveries before losing his wicket to pacer Umar Nazir Mir, extending his run of disappointing performances. As soon as Rohit got out, several disgruntled fans left the stadium, confirmed multiple media reports. The flop batting performance also saw Rohit slip to a disappointing 19-year low. With the three-run knock, his batting average in the 2024/25 first-class season dipped to 10.43 in 16 innings. This is the lowest average for an Indian batter while batting for minimum 15 innings in the top six since 2006. It is worth noting that England’s Haseeb Hameed tops the overall list with a poor average of 9.44 in 18 innings in the 2018 season. Here is how Rohit …
