Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffer blowout in Thailand Open finals as tall-person problems persist

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffer blowout in Thailand Open finals as tall-person problems persist

Riding confidence would be one way to go about the next two years for Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, but that is not sustainable, given how losses on Tour are bound to drag it down in a jiffy. What was broken at the Olympics – their spirit – can only be mended at the Olympics. But in the meantime, the bruised game can be patched back, so it doesn’t fritter a good week with a terrible finish – a 21-12, 25-23 loss to Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin at the Super 500 Thailand Open. Their first final in 8 months after China Masters, was also about nerves, just like that straight sets loss to Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho in September of 2025. For a pair that used to pick titles easily, a mid-career crisis has hit, where some very solvable issues in their games need solving — technically. Though when Satwik says problems are more mental than physical, he is not off the mark. His own confidence crisis is very clearly dating back …

‘Lately I’ve been thinking about him a lot’: For Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, a memorial badminton tournament in his hometown aims to honour late father’s legacy | Badminton News

At the Officers Recreation Club in Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, star Indian doubles shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy was up and about till 5 am on Saturday morning. Long days and late nights are part of a professional athlete’s career, but on this day, Satwik wasn’t playing a tournament. He was making sure that all arrangements were in order at Sports Kasi Badminton Academy for the memorial tournament he and his brother Ramcharan were organising over the weekend to honour their late father, Rankireddy Kasiviswanadham. “Satwik was there all night from Friday till Saturday morning. He was doing the court markings and taping. I was surprised. I told him, ‘arrey, you are World No.4, why are you doing all this?’ But whatever was needed, he was doing it,” Ramcharan chuckles. “This is where I started practising,” Satwik adds in a conversation with The Indian Express. “The venue is around 50 years old. It used to be a marriage hall-cum-badminton court, and had cement flooring. So whenever there used to be a wedding, it was an off day for …

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty Enter All England Second Round

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the second round of the men’s doubles competition at the All England Championships, registering a straight-game victory over Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard. Returning to the court after his father’s loss last month, Satwik, along with his doubles partner Chirag, put on an impressive display, securing a 21-17, 21-15 win in just 40 minutes late Wednesday. Moments after sealing the victory, Satwik raised his finger to the sky, his gaze fixed skyward — perhaps reaching out to his father, searching for him in the beyond. “It’s tough, but that’s how life is,” said Satwik. “It wasn’t expected.” The 24-year-old from Amalapuram expressed his gratitude to his partner for being there during this challenging time. “During hard times he (Shetty) came to my home town, we practised there a bit, and for that I’m thankful. He was there during my injury; his parents came down and our coach also came down to my home town. “My father always wanted to bring them there.” Reflecting on …

In the passing away of coach Viswanatham, the father of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, badminton lost a gentle giant | Badminton News

Tall, quiet, sturdy and cheerful. Just like the coconut trees that made the coastal district of Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema, one of the most pleasant places in Andhra. R Kasi Viswanatham, father of India’s brightest doubles star, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, was the coolest ‘badminton dad’ in India, a towering figure who gave the country one of its finest athletes, while he remained gently and graciously in the background. His passing on Thursday, after a cardiac arrest, en route Delhi to watch his son get feted with the Khel Ratna, at age 65, cast a pall of gloom on the Indian badminton fraternity. The gentle giant was no more. Kasi Viswanatham will forever stay imprinted in memory for one of the most endearing things uttered, that shaped the sport in India. Like his towering father, a teenaged Satwik had a massive leap — just like fellow giants from this coastal Andhra district with its volleyball-loving spikers, a talent base that might be the best-kept secret of Indian sport. With that lethal jump smash (he eventually set a …

Malaysia Open: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty stumble onto Korean lefty heavyweight in loss | Badminton News

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty find themselves in a flux that’s occurred but never quite made headlines: missing making finals at All England, World Championship and the ultimate coup de grace, the Olympics. The lessons for 2025 are straightforward: soak up losses, not panic, but not be deluded that everything will fall into place immediately. It’s literally starting from scratch, with coach Tan Kim Her. The semis loss at Malaysia Super 1000 was still early days, against Korean Seo Seung-jae and Kim Won-ho. A final and semis appearance in the two tournaments on their return from a five-month break, when they are clearly very off-the-boil, points to their calibre. But the 21-10, 21-15 flattening, in 40 minutes, might be their shortest loss, their briefest fight in other words. And Satwik knew he could cop a part of the blame. “We were prepared but they played really well. I should’ve followed a bit of the game plan, but I played random strokes,” he would tell BWF. It would be naive to believe that the Indians got …

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, Chirag Shetty barge into semis

India’s crack men’s doubles pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open 2025, which is a prestigious BWF World Tour Super 1000 event. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty took down Malaysia’s Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi in straight games — with the score line reading 26-24, 21-15 — in a dominant performance on court. Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi got massive support from the home fans. But it did not faze Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. “This is a good start to the year, we couldn’t have started on a better note. We want to still go as deep in the tournament as possible,” Chirag Shetty said after their win. “As athletes, these are the kind of stadiums you want to play in. You want to play in packed arenas in the crucial parts of a tournament. We really could not have asked for a better crowd. Obviously the crowd was supporting the local pair. But as a professional badminton athlete, this is one of …

My Diary 2024: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy – ‘Paris defeat is very personal… handling things wasn’t easy at that point’ | Badminton News

As a hectic year of sports gallops to the finish line, India’s top athletes pause and reflect; tell the stories of their podium highs, battered bodies and shattered dreams. In a special series, some look back with fondness, a few others with regrets. But all with the hope – and wish – of a better 2025. As far as life-changing years ago, 2024 will be right up there for me. We dedicate our lives to doing well at the Olympics, but it’s life after that is very hectic. Mentally, it will take a lot of time to digest things. This one, the quarterfinal defeat at the Paris Olympics, is very personal. The Olympics were the main goal this year. The build-up was good. We started the year by reaching two finals, in Malaysia and India; then we won the French Open. It was all going good until suddenly, out of nowhere I had a back injury, from nowhere I had an elbow tear… Now, I usually play with a lot of pain. So, I thought, …

India Badminton Doubles Stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy And Chirag Shetty Break Silence On Paris Olympics Early Exit

Indian shuttler Chirag Shetty, one-half of the popular men’s doubles duo with Satwiksairaj Rankireddy — popularly known as ‘Sat-Chi’ — opened up on the disappointing Paris Olympics 2024 exit in the quarterfinals and revealed the duo’s comeback plans to the court. Despite starting the knockout stage on a dominating note, Satwik and Chirag’s hopes of returning to India with an Olympic medal were eventually crushed. With a 21-13, 14-21, 16-21 loss, Satwik and Chirag bowed out of the Paris Olympics back in August. Speaking to ANI, Chirag said that the quarterfinal exit was a “disappointing” one and it was some “unlucky points and missed opportunities” in the third game that made a difference. He also affirmed hope that the duo will win a medal for the country in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. “Quite disappointed that we could not come back with a medal. We really wanted to go out there and win a medal for our country. Things did not go our way in the third game. We were leading at one …
