Ex-Maharashtra Minister Anil Parab acquitted in Dapoli resort case

A special court in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district has acquitted former state minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab in a case linked to alleged illegal construction of a resort and tax irregularities in Dapoli, reported the PTI. Special Judge Prasanna S Chandgude, who hears Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) cases at Khed, delivered the verdict on Tuesday. Apart from Parab, four others — village sarpanch Suresh Shankar Tupe, gramsevak Anant Dnyandev Koli, circle officer Sudhir Shantaram Pardule and sub-divisional officer Jayram Vinayak Deshpande — were also acquitted of all charges, according to the PTI. The case stemmed from a complaint filed in 2021 by former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya. The complaint alleged irregularities in property tax assessment and environmental violations related to the construction of a resort at Murud in Dapoli taluka of Ratnagiri district, the news agency reported. According to the prosecution, the Murud gram panchayat had assessed property tax without confirming whether the building was fully completed. Maharashtra: 11 injured in massive explosion at chemical factory in Ratnagiri

At least 11 persons, most of them workers, were injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on Friday, police said, reported the PTI. According to the police, the explosion took place at the Dr Khan Industrial Consultants (DKIC) unit located at Lote Parshuram MIDC (chemical zone), around 250 km from Mumbai. DKIC is a leading manufacturer of various specialty silica based chemicals and chemical intermediates and caters to a wide array of industries ranging from steel, textile, paints and electronics, as per the PTI. The injured have been admitted to local hospital, police said, adding they are probing the cause of the accident. A talathi, or village revenue official, has been arrested for allegedly taking a bribe in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) said on Friday. The accused, Bajrang Dattatray Chavan (51), was posted at Saza Chafe village, the ACB said in a statement. According to the complainant, he had purchased a plot of non-agricultural land in Agarnaral and submitted an application to the talathi office on October 9 to update the 7/12 extract, which reflects the land title, news agency PTI reported. Chavan allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 from him. Following a complaint, the ACB laid a trap at Chavan’s office on Thursday and caught him red-handed while accepting the money. A case has been registered at Jaigad Police Station, and further investigation is underway, PTI reported. In what is believed to be a first for the state, forest officials in Maharashtra have discovered a rare white Indian leopard cub in Ratnagiri district, the officials said on Thursday. Confirming the rare sighting in state, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Girija Desai from the Ratnagiri forest department, while said, “We have come across a white newborn cub of an Indian leopard in Ratnagiri district. We also found the cub`s mother and an another cub nearby.” She added, “We have also located the mother with an another cub at the spot. We are using camera traps and keeping a close tab on the mother and cubs. As the cub is extremely small it is difficult to say if it is leucistic or albinistic. However this is the first such record from Maharashtra where a white colour leopard cub has been spotted.” Leucistic or lucism happens due to genetic mutation that leads to abnormally pale or light coloration. If compared with albinistic or albinism in leopards, the body coat with visible rosette patterns will be replaced with …

However, Ratnagiri police on Thursday refuted the accounts of forcible entry, saying that there had only been some aggressive sloganeering during the procession, which is a traditional part of Holi celebrations in the Konkan region. A misleading reel about the incident has been deleted, police added. An FIR has been registered for sloganeering and unlawful assembly. A local Muslim lawyer has sought a stronger FIR and strict action against the culprits.
