Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Hasee Toh Phasee join the growing list: Are re-releases a guarantee of box-office success?

Bollywood is increasingly turning to its past to draw audiences back to theatres. Multiplexes have witnessed a steady rise in films returning to the big screen, from cult favourites to relatively recent titles finding a second theatrical life. Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Tere Naam and Hasee Toh Phasee In the past year alone, nearly 25 Hindi films have been re-released: Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), and more recently Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018) and Hasee Toh Phasee (2014). While some have generated impressive footfalls and surprising box office numbers, others have struggled. The mixed results suggest that re-releases are far from a guaranteed success formula. Films that were major hits during their original run have not always found the same enthusiasm upon returning to theatres. For instance, Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone-Shahid Kapoor’s Padmaavat (2018) reportedly earned only modest numbers in its recent re-release. The restored original cut of Sholay (1975) also saw limited traction. How some re-releases have fared Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani: ₹21 crore Sanam Teri Kasam : ₹41 …

Box office report card 2025 | How word-of-mouth’s return gave Bollywood its most Dhurandhar year ever

Till December, many trade pundits in Indian cinema had marvelled how no Indian film in 2025 had crossed the ₹1000-crore mark, considered the benchmark for an ‘all-time blockbuster’. Kantara Chapter One came close, Chhaava threatened it for a bit. But both failed. Till Dhurandhar sailed past the mark in just over three weeks, it seemed as if the year would end for Indian cinema without a ‘1000-crore hit’. But would that have been any indication of how stellar the year has been for Indian cinema? Not by a mile. At the box office, in terms of revenue, diversity, and range across genres and languages, this has been the best year for Indian cinema, a resounding comeback after the dark depths of the pandemic years. Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar is the biggest box office success story of 2025. Indian box office breaks all-time record in 2025 Trade sources say that the cumulative box office revenue for all Indian films in 2025 is expected to surpass the ₹13500 crore mark domestically. This includes three films – Dhurandhar, Chhaava, …

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Satya, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai: Re-releases to rule box office in 2025? Experts weigh in

2024 was undoubtedly the year of re-releases, and it seems that 2025 is set to follow suit. The reason behind this trend is quite simple: a growing demand for more entertainment. Ranbir Kapoor, Manoj Bajpayee in stills from their respective films. This year, there will be several gaps between the release of anticipated films, and industry experts believe that classic, iconic films fill this void effectively, helping ensure the audiences continue to turn up at cinema halls. In January alone, three films are re-releasing – Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, Manoj Bajpayee-starrer Satya (1998) and Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai (2000), which marked actor Hrithik Roshan’s debut. The trend is here to stay Trade expert Atul Mohan tells us, “I don’t think this trend is going to die any time soon, and there’s logic for it. The lineup of new films this year is good enough, but many won’t be able to make it; they might get postponed to next year. We will therefore have some Fridays where we won’t …

Dia Mirza on Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein re-release: I was miserable when it didn’t work initially

Sep 01, 2024 10:23 AM IST Dia Mirza recalls the initial reception of RHTDM and says, “The experience of dealing with it as a newcomer was cruel.” Re-releases are becoming a notable trend this season, with films of various genres, from thrillers like Gangs of Wasseypur (2012) to blockbusters such as Kantara (2022), finding their way back into theatres. The latest addition to this phenomenon is Dia Mirza and R Madhavan starrer Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (RHTDM), which celebrated another release on August 30 in select theatres. This re-release marks the film’s return to the big screen more than two decades after its debut in 2001. Dia Mirza made her acting debut with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. When asked if this trend reflects a lack of charm in new films, Mirza offers a thoughtful perspective. “I think there are more serious films that can also be re-released. A whole new generation is getting exposed to the beauty and magnificence of that thought process. These re-releases are also playing on nostalgia. I know of …
