Bail, liberty, and a Supreme Court split in reading UAPA

The Supreme Court has once again been drawn into a constitutional debate over the scope of personal liberty under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), after a two-judge bench emphatically reaffirmed earlier this week that “bail is the rule and jail is the exception” even in terrorism-related prosecutions, while the Delhi police rushed to another bench hearing Delhi riots cases pressing for a resolution of the issue by a larger bench. The ruling openly questioned the reasoning adopted by another two-judge bench headed by justice Aravind Kumar in January this year while denying bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid and activist Sharjeel Imam (PTI FILE) The context is the May 18 judgment by a bench of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan granting bail to Jammu & Kashmir resident Syed Iftikhar Andrabi in a narco-terror case investigated by the National Investigation Agency. In a strongly worded ruling, the bench held that constitutional courts cannot permit Section 43D(5) of the UAPA — the provision imposing stringent conditions for bail — to eclipse the guarantees of liberty …

‘I was very scared of my father’: Aamir Khan reveals the only two films he signed without reading script | Bollywood News

Aamir Khan has long been known as Bollywood’s ‘Mr Perfectionist,’ known for choosing films with strong, meaningful storytelling. But early in his career, his track record wasn’t always as perfect. In a recent chat with Zakir Khan, the actor opened up about his decision-making process and revealed that there were two projects in his career where he said yes without even hearing the script. Aamir explained that his decision-making process has always been deeply instinctive rather than strategic. “When I choose a film, my heart has to be in it, whether I’m part of it as an actor or a producer. When I’m hearing or choosing a story, I become like an audience member. If it touches my heart, if it’s saying something new and excites me, that’s when I decide whether to produce it or act in it.” The two films Aamir Khan signed blindly Aamir revealed that early in his career, he took on two films without knowing their stories—both at the insistence of his father, filmmaker Tahir Hussain. “There are only two …

World Book Day | Raashii Khanna: I prefer a physical book over reading on applications

On World Book Day today, actor Raashii Khanna says reading is not merely a pastime but a way of engaging with the complexities of human emotion and experience. Drawn to stories that explore what often remains unspoken, Raashii reflects on how literature has sharpened her understanding of people and deepened her self-awareness, calling it an “essential part” of her life. “Very early on, my friends introduced me to reading, and it changed my world. I am naturally drawn to the inner world that we all carry. I gravitate towards stories about what people don’t say out loud—whether it’s trauma, silence, spirituality, healing, or even women finding their voice,” shares Raashii. Actor Raashii Khanna That inclination naturally feeds into her work as an actor. Reading, she explains, sharpens her ability to imagine and interpret human behaviour beyond what is visible. “You create the world in your own mind when you read, and that helps you understand people more deeply—their layers that aren’t always obvious,” she notes. It is this process of internalising emotions and perspectives that …

Will he join BJP, what happens to RS seat, and does he have a Punjab role? Reading the signs| India News

In the space of less than a week, Raghav Chadha has gone from being Aam Aadmi Party’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha to its most publicly attacked sitting MP — stripped of his post, blocked from speaking in Parliament from the party’s quota; and accused by his own colleagues of being “compromised” and in league with the Centre’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AAP MP Raghav Chadha has raised some “middle-class” issues lately in the Rajya Sabha, but his party says he avoided confrontation with PM Narendra Modi’s BJP/NDA government on more serious issues. (PTI File Photo) Two questions now dominate political conversation: will Chadha formally move to the BJP, as AAP leaders are increasingly alleging? And if he does, or is pushed out, does he keep his Rajya Sabha seat? Neither has a simple answer. Plus, there’s the Punjab angle. Chadha’s turn, in his own words and AAP’s The immediate public show of the fallout was AAP’s letter to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat on April 2, replacing Chadha as the party’s deputy leader …

Book Box | Reading war at 35,000 feet: Books that decode West Asia conflict

Dear Reader, Readers worldwide turn to literature to decode the complexities of the West Asia conflict Three hours after we take off from London, the plane begins to lurch. At first, I don’t notice; I am half asleep. Then the seat belt sign flashes on. I look around at the darkened cabin and am seized with a sudden dread—are we flying over Iran? This war feels as if it is closing in, everything from gas shortages to scary stories from people close to the hostilities, like a colleague from Dubai telling us about the fighter planes that escorted his commercial aircraft out of the airport, or another showing us pictures of drone battles shot with his phone. All day I have been reading Black Wave, a history of the West Asia since 1979. At 35,000 feet, somewhere over the region it describes, it stops feeling like history and starts feeling like the present tense. Ghattas moves between power and people—Saudi crown princes, Egyptian intellectuals, Syrian rulers, and the writers and journalists who lived through these …
