4 min readChandigarhUpdated: May 27, 2026 08:55 PM IST The Punjab and Haryana High Court has held Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) Vice-Chancellor Karamjeet Singh and Registrar Karamjit Singh Chahal guilty of contempt of court for “willfully disobeying” judicial directions relating to grant of minimum pay scale benefits to daily wage employees. A bench of Justice Pankaj Jain ordered both the officials to undergo simple imprisonment for one month. The court, however, suspended the operation of the sentence till July 7, 2027, to enable the respondents to file an appeal. The contempt petitions were filed by Parveen Kumar and some other employees of the GNDU, through Senior Advocate Puneet Jindal, alleging non-compliance of earlier writ court directions granting benefits of minimum pay scale, dearness allowance and grade pay to eligible daily wage workers. The court noted that the original writ petitions had been disposed of relying upon the Supreme Court judgment in State of Punjab versus Jagjit Singh and the court had held that employees serving for long periods were entitled to minimum pay scale …

In a fresh reminder, the RGI has made it clear that these are punishable offences, attracting up to three years’ imprisonment under the Census Act. In a communication sent on March 17 to all states, Registrar General & Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan listed the penalties prescribed under Section 11 of the Census Act, 1948, which range from a Rs 1,000 penalty to three years’ imprisonment, or both.“Any Census officer, or any person lawfully required to assist in the taking of the Census, who refuses to perform duties assigned under the Act…or who hinders or obstructs another person from discharging such duties, can face legal action. Biradar, Registrar of the Central University of Karnataka (CUK), presented a research paper titled ‘Economic Benefits of Microfossils in Oil Exploration in India: A Case Study of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’ at the Micropalaeontological Society Annual Meeting 2025, held at the University of Pisa, Italy, from November 5 to 8. The conference, organised by the Department of Earth Science, University of Pisa, brought together leading scientists and researchers from across the world to discuss advances in micropalaeontology. Prof. Biradar’s study analysed the application and economic benefits of microfossils in petroleum, coal and climate studies, including nanoscience. It argued that microfossil analysis as an exploration tool can reduce the risk of drilling dry wells by up to 40%, thereby cutting overall oil exploration costs by nearly one-fourth. The FBI is attempting to track down the identity of the owner of Archive.today and its numerous mirrors, like Archive.is and Archive.ph. As reported by 404 Media, the FBI subpoena, which was posted on the official Archive.today X account, was sent to web domain registrar Tucows on October 30th demanding the “customer or subscriber name, address of service, and billing address” associated with Archive.today. The subpoena also requests telephone records, payment information, internet session info, network addresses, and even the services the site’s owner has used, such as email or cloud computing services. It goes on to say that this info “relates to a federal criminal investigation being conducted by the FBI,” but it doesn’t reference a specific crime. Archive.today has been around since 2012, but the identity of the site’s owner remains unconfirmed. File | Photo Credit: The Hindu The Registrar General of India’s (RGI) office has cautioned private and government hospitals that they must report incidents of birth and death within 21 days, after it was found that many medical institutions were flouting the law, delaying universal registration. Instead of immediately reporting births and deaths, many hospitals are waiting for relatives to request it or even directing relatives to report it themselves, the RGI said. In a March 17, 2025 circular, the RGI’s office said that 90% of birth or death events are getting registered in India and significant progress has been made towards the goal of universal registration. However, “the target of 100% registration of births and deaths is yet to be achieved.” “One of the primary reasons for non-realisation of the goal of universal registration is non-reporting of birth and death events by some hospitals, be it private or government, as per the provisions of RBD,” the circular said. ‘Negligence …
