Technology can help improve the quality and credibility of electoral rolls, but there is no single voter registration model that can be uniformly adopted across countries, Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka V. Anbu Kumar said on June 10. Addressing an international workshop on ‘Technology-Driven Voter Registration (TDVR) – Stakeholder Validation Workshop’ in Bengaluru, Mr. Anbu Kumar said a global comparative study undertaken when India chaired the International IDEA was intended to promote learning and knowledge-sharing rather than advocate a particular system. “The objective is not to recommend any one voter registration model, but to identify good practices, validate findings, and develop internationally relevant standards for accurate, inclusive, secure and trusted voter registration systems,” he said. Study of 87 election bodies The study examined voter registration systems followed by 87 Election Management Bodies (EMBs) across North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, making it one of the most extensive international reviews of technology-driven voter registration systems. The board made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday and also announced a helpline number for those seeking technical guidance on online registration. The release said the UMEED portal has been brought in practice to ensure transparency, responsibility, legal protection and orderly digital management of waqf properties. The board said that many waqf properties have not completed their registration with the necessary documents and details and appealed to them to do so by May 26. The release added that under the UMEED Act, 2025, the deadline of May 26 for the online registration is final and it won’t be further extended. Come July, vehicle buyers in Punjab will drive out with smart registration certificate (RCs) in hand the very day they buy their vehicle. At present, nearly 2,000 automobile dealers across Punjab issue only provisional RCs at the time of sale. (HT) Aiming to streamline the registration process and eliminate long waits, the Punjab government has approved a new system allowing automobile dealers to issue the RC right after the vehicle sale is completed. The new process, part of a broader push toward digitisation and citizen-centric services in the transport department, is expected to kick in within two months. At present, nearly 2,000 automobile dealers across Punjab issue only provisional RCs at the time of sale. The smart RC — considered the official proof of vehicle registration — typically reaches owners within two to three weeks. With around 64,000 vehicles, both transport and non-transport, being registered every month in the state, delays in issuing RCs have been a persistent concern.
