(HT) The announcement was made during a press conference addressed by association president Pradeep Walhekar. Also present were members Narendra Pasalkar, Chaitanya Raisoni, Sachin Kate, Narendra Mahajan and Vikram Dhoot. Explaining the rationale behind the decision, Walhekar said that the industry has been facing increasing regulatory challenges due to lack of uniformity in rules across departments. “The industry has become a soft target for authorities over the past few months. It is very challenging to comply with existing rules as there is no uniformity among various government departments,” he said. Pointing to conflicting directives from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Pune Municipal …

Relief to 2.22 crore power consumers in Bihar, Regulatory Commission announces no tariff hike for next FY

Amid the speculation of hike in the power tariff, the regulatory body Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) on Wednesday announced that there will be “no tariff hike for 2026-27 across all categories” as it decided to keep the tariff rate unchanged for next financial year starting April 01. The decision will provide a big relief to the 2.22 crore power consumers in Bihar. The Commission rejected the proposal of both Discoms — North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd & South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd — for 35 paise tariff hike across categories in energy charges. A full commission comprising Chairman Amir Subhani and two members Parshuram Singh Yadav and Arun Kumar Sinha pronounced the tariff orders for financial year 2026-27 on a bunch of petitions filed by both the Discoms and other power companies like transmission company, Bihar Grid Company, SLDC and others. “The proposal of DISCOMs for an increase in energy charges by 35 paise per unit across all categories of consumers is not accepted. Jane Street continues with its IIT hirings amid regulatory imbroglio

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI : Even as it battles India’s market regulator, high-frequency trading (HFT) firm Jane Street has made its presence felt at the country’s top institutes with marquee offers. The firm has hired students from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses and could once again emerge as their highest-paying recruiter. The New York-headquartered company has recruited students from the class of 2026 for its Hong Kong team, even as its dispute with the Indian regulator is set to be heard by the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) this month. “Jane Street has recruited from IIT-Bombay, Delhi and Madras,” said an executive aware of the development. HFT and quant firms hire candidates who can analyze markets using mathematical and statistical models. Despite the global crests and troughs, this segment managed to recruit students from IITs for global postings at salaries that easily cross crore plus. Although Mint could not ascertain the exact amount that Jane Street has offered to the students, the package could be similar to the one for batch of 2025, which was slightly above …

Opposition slams Centre over IndiGo flight chaos, alleges regulatory failure

Opposition slams Centre over IndiGo flight chaos, alleges regulatory failure

As widespread delays and cancellations cripple IndiGo’s operations across major airports, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Centre, alleging that the government was protecting the airline instead of regulating it.   Her remarks come at a time when thousands of passengers are stranded across the country due to severe network disruptions. Chaturvedi said, “Who will explain the reasons? The people who never gave you any reason will now try to explain why the norms were not being followed. While other airlines complied, why was IndiGo given exemption? The entire government seems to be in IndiGo’s pocket and it has been proven that as soon as flights stopped taking off or were canceled, they violated the existing norms and regulations. I believe this has been going on for a long time. Why did the Civil Aviation Ministry allow them to continue their arbitrary actions? Why were the DGCA officials not held accountable? Now, only a show cause notice is being issued…” Echoing the criticism, Trinamool MP Kirti Azad …

Letter written to Principal Accountant for audit of discom regulatory assets: TNERC

Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) said a letter has been written to Principal Accountant General Chennai for nomination of an audit party to carry out intensive audit of the circumstances which lead to power distribution companies continuing without recovery of regulatory assets.  The costs incurred by power distribution companies, which are not recovered in a timely manner, lead to the regulatory assets (RA).  The Supreme Court had issued broader directions to all the State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs),  mandating liquidation of legacy RAs within four years. The top court has capped the creation of new RAs at 3% of the Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR). It directed the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (Aptel) to monitor the implementation and enforce accountability on the creation and liquidation of RAs. As per a petition filed by TNERC with the Aptel, the State power utilities’ regulatory assets stood at ₹83,000 crore. The State government has issued an order for the restructuring and bifurcation of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco) for the formation of three companies, namely the Tamil Nadu …

US to seek tariff cuts, regulatory reforms in trade deal: Think tank

US to seek tariff cuts, regulatory reforms in trade deal: Think tank

The US is expected to push for sweeping changes in India’s policies, ranging from tariff reductions to regulatory overhauls, that could benefit American firms and exporters, under the proposed bilateral trade agreement with India, think tank GTRI said on Sunday. In the agri sector, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said, the US demands scaling back India’s minimum price support programmes for crops like rice and wheat, removing restrictions on genetically modified (GM) imports, and lowering farm tariffs. Similarly, on dairy, the US argues that India’s GM-free feed certification and facility registration protocols effectively bar American dairy imports. Indian rules prohibit imports from animals fed with animal-derived feed, for example, butter from a cow-fed meat due to religious sensitivities. KSEB seeks Electricity Regulatory Commission’s nod for long-term power procurement using coal allocation

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has sought the State Electricity Regulatory Commission’s approval for going ahead with its plans for long-term power procurement using its coal allocation under the Scheme for Harnessing and Allocating Koyala Transparently in India (SHAKTI). The Commission is expected to conduct a hearing on the KSEB plea in this regard on Tuesday. Under the scheme, the KSEB hopes to tie up round-the-clock (RTC) power of 500 megawatts (MW) for 25 years. The Centre, responding to a request by the Kerala government, had earmarked long-term coal linkage for 500 MW under Part B (iv) of the Union Coal Ministry’s SHAKTI scheme last year. Para B (iv) of the scheme provides for the allocation of coal linkages for fresh power purchase agreements to States. States can transfer these linkages to distribution companies (Discoms) – the KSEB in Kerala’s case. The KSEB has also sought the approval of the Commission for roping in Central PSU Power Finance Corporation (PFC) as transaction advisor for the long-term procurement. The State-run power …

SC refuses to examine plea seeking regulatory framework on cryptocurrencies

SC refuses to examine plea seeking regulatory framework on cryptocurrencies

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to examine a plea seeking a regulatory framework on cryptocurrencies and said it couldn`t “lay down the law”. A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. They exist on decentralised networks using blockchain technology — a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. The plea came up for hearing before a bench of Justices B R Gavai and Augustine George Masih. The counsel appearing for the petitioners claimed several complaints were filed across the country over cryptocurrencies. The counsel said the petitioners were seeking directions to the Centre and others for a regulatory framework on the issue as there was no law to regulate it. “It is in the domain of policy makers. How can we,” Justice Gavai asked, “issue any such direction? We can`t lay down the law”. The bench said the petitioners could make a representation on the issue to the Government of India. The counsel argued several petitioners approached different police authorities …
