Having continued to live on the site of their broken homes, over the rubble, the upcoming monsoon raised anxieties among the homeless about their continued existence and their children’s health. Much of the land on the Eastern Freeway, which has been occupied by warehouses and slum homes for decades, belongs to the Mumbai Port Trust Authority (MbPA) under the central government. Despite the residents having lived in the area for three to four generations with documents to show proof — with the previous generations having worked at the port — the MbPA’s lack of a housing policy means they did not receive alternative homes. On May 12, around 200 homes along New Tank Bundar Road were demolished, leaving around 500 people out on the streets. Officials from the MbPA warned other informal homes in the area too …

The Punjab health department has increased the daily food allowance for inmates at drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres across Punjab from ₹150 to ₹200 per person for three meals. The department has also introduced a standardised food menu to improve nutrition for patients undergoing treatment. Earlier in January, the Punjab government had fixed ₹150 per inmate for three meals a day, a decision that drew criticism from employees of de-addiction centres. (AP File) The revised menu includes fruits, salad, dry fruits, paneer or eggs once a week, and a daily serving of lassi supplied by Verka, according to an order issued by deputy director (mental health) Dr Rohini Goyal to all civil surgeons. Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the first phase of the rehabilitation of the landslide survivors of Chooralmala-Mundakkai, handing over homes built as part of the township to 178 families and promising to rehabilitate the others before the start of the southwest monsoon in June. A total of 402 families comprising of 1662 people will reside in the township upon completion. Over 250 people were killed on July 30, 2024, in a series of landslides in Wayanad’s Mundakkai-Chooralmala villages. Making the sixth revision to its ‘Surrender and Rehabilitation of Left-Wing Extremists’ scheme in the past two decades, the Odisha Government has announced financial incentives for mainstreaming of persons native to the State who are involved in Maoist activities irrespective of where they surrender to the authorities. After substantially increasing reward money for surrendered left-wing extremists (LWEs) in November last year, the Mohan Majhi Government has relaxed the eligibility criteria for surrendering Maoist cadres. The State police, in coordination with Central security forces, have stepped up their efforts to bring Maoist activities down to zero by March 31, a deadline set by the Union Home Ministry. “Persons native to Odisha State, who are active in the activities of the above organisations outside the State of Odisha, will be considered eligible for surrender if their involvement is certified by the concerned Superintendent of Police,” says the notification issued on February 9. “It will be necessary to obtain a no objection certificate from the concerned State that such surrendered person has not been provided rehabilitation facilities in …

The Kerala High Court’s decision not to extend the deadline for the evacuation and rehabilitation of 126 families along the Konthuruthy river poramboke has put the Kochi Corporation in a fix as it now faces what it claims is an impossible task to complete within the originally allotted four months. With its plea for an extension rejected, the civic body is now considering approaching the apex court after examining the verdict. Mayor V.K. Minimol said the Corporation was yet to receive a copy of the judgment to assess the grounds on which the request was denied. “It is impossible for the Corporation to pull this off alone without State government’s assistance.
