Guntur Agriculture Market Committee Chairman Kurra Appa Rao holds a meeting with chilli exporters’ associations in Guntur on Friday. | Photo Credit: BY ARRANGEMENT Following reports of China rejecting a handful of chilli containers from India, the Agriculture Market Committee (AMC) in Guntur, the largest chilli market yard in South Asia, has initiated measures to strengthen quality control and promote pesticide residue-free production. The AMC held a meeting with exporters on Friday. Speaking to The Hindu after the meeting, AMC Chairman Kurra Appa Rao said exporters from the region ship lakhs of tonnes of chillies to China every year and that exports have continued unhindered despite recent concerns over pesticide residues. He clarified that only three consignments were flagged for residue issues and that the development had not affected subsequent shipments. The companies whose containers were rejected were allowed to resume exports after complying with the required norms. “A few container rejections are not a major concern in global trade.
