Rejuvenation helps Otteri lake in Vellore to reach full capacity since 2021 floods

Spread over 19 acres, the Otteri lake was built in 1904 to provide a regular water supply to British troops stationed inside Vellore fort. | Photo Credit: SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT Rejuvenation of Otteri lake, a British-era man-made facility, on the outskirts of Vellore Corporation, has helped the waterbody to reach its full storage capacity on Saturday since the 2021 floods. Officials of Vellore Corporation, which maintains the waterbody, said that regular rain in catchment areas like Palamathi, Kolavimedu and Naickaneri tribal hamlets at Jawadhu Hills in October has gradually increased water level in the lake. “Water from the lake is also drawn to meet the water needs of residents within civic body limits. The full capacity of the lake also helps to recharge groundwater in its surrounding,” said R. Lakshman, Commissioner, Vellore Corporation. Spread over 19 acres, the Otteri lake was built in 1904 to provide a regular water supply to British troops stationed inside Vellore fort. Pipelines and Over Head Tanks (OHTs) were built to supply water from the lake to officers’ quarters inside the …

The world has witnessed the religious and spiritual fervour that moved the entire nation while it celebrated its reverence for the river goddess Ganga. Yet, the event is fundamentally a manifestation of a profound and deep-seated river-society relationship. Cultural gatherings such as the Maha Kumbh are known to happen along rivers and water bodies. Can we leverage this relationship for the enduring rejuvenation of rivers and water bodies? The Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj takes place along a stretch of about 20 km and in an area of 40 square km around the sangam of the Ganga, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. The river bed and surrounding area are transformed into a temporary settlement to receive the pilgrims and visitors. A Harvard University study called it an “ephemeral mega-city”. Built in just …

Delhi Pollution Control Panel Submits Yamuna Rejuvenation Plan To PM’s Office

New Delhi: With the change in government in the national capital, an action plan to rejuvenate the Yamuna river has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), focusing on boosting sewage treatment capacity and other critical measures, officials said on Wednesday. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) under the Department of Environment presented a document to the PMO last week regarding the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna. The plan, accessed by PTI, also outlines key measures, including tapping of major drains, setting up new sewage treatment plants (STPs), connecting drainage system in JJ clusters, trapping all drains, upgrading common effluent treatment plants (CETPs), removing encroachments from floodplains and beautifying the riverfront. Cleaning of the Yamuna was at the centre of politics in the run-up to the Delhi assembly polls with the BJP slamming the then ruling AAP for failing to rejuvenate the river during its 10-year rule. The BJP, which has come to power winning 48 out of the 70 assembly seats in the recent polls, has said cleaning of the Yamuna will …

5 years on, BMC’s ambitious Poisar River rejuvenation project gets green nod | Mumbai News

5 years on, BMC’s ambitious Poisar River rejuvenation project gets green nod | Mumbai News

Five years after it was conceptualised and more than two years after contractors were appointed, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC’s) ambitious project to rejuvenate Poisar River received environment clearance on Tuesday. “Clearances have come through from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mangrove Cell, and Coastal Zone Management Authority. The work on the construction of the STPs [sewage treatment plants] will be initiated directly since the contractor is already being appointed. However, there might also be a cost escalation owing to a change in market forces over the past two years,” a civic official said. The Poisar River, which was once a freshwater urban stream, originates from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and falls into the Marve Creek traversing Mumbai’s western suburbs. However, with the change in demography over the past 10 years, this river became polluted, mainly due to the discharge of residential and industrial sewage directly into the river water. As a result, in 2019, civic authorities floated the proposal of rejuvenating the river by setting up 10 mini STPs …

160-year-old peepal tree gets rejuvenation therapy

A peepal tree, over 160 years old, at the Sreemoola Sthanam of Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple here is undergoing a ‘surgery’ and rejuvenation therapy. The peepal tree (Ficus religiosa), a revered landmark, has been under specialised treatment by the experts of the Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) for some time now. The current treatment focuses on stimulating new roots, eliminating harmful fungi from the outer bark, and strengthening the tree’s new growth. The restoration process is almost a combination of a tree surgery and rejuvenation therapy, says P. Sujanapal, of the KFRI, who is leading the therapy. “Removing the dead, diseased, damaged, and pathogen-infected sections was the first step in the restoration process. We tackled pests and insects, clearing them out to help the tree recover. Decayed roots were removed. Over time, the old banyan had lost its natural balance due to decayed and fallen branches. Plus, its growth was constrained by the surrounding stone wall. To restore balance, we pruned some of the heavy branches. To provide extra support and stability for this ancient tree …

Accompanied by Deputy Mayor M. Sunil Kumar, Minister for Water Resources Duraimurugan on Sunday inspected the work, which was started in December 2022 by the Water Resources Department (WRD) that maintains the twin irrigation tanks. With the withdrawal of northeast monsoon in the coming days, the work might be fast tracked due to decline in groundwater level around the lakes. It would help ongoing desilting and deepening of the waterbodies much faster. “The lakes help to recharge the groundwater covering at least 8-10 villages in its surroundings. Most of these areas are farming villages,” R. Ramkumar, Assistant Engineer (AE), PWD (Katpadi), told The Hindu. Spread over 100 acres, the …
