The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has strongly criticised Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan and demanded his immediate removal from the state Cabinet and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), reported IANS. The Congress has accused Mahajan of making “anti-national” remarks and of insulting the Indian Armed Forces during a recent visit to Punjab. What triggered the controversy? The issue began after Mahajan attended the 42nd anniversary event of Operation Blue Star on June 6 at the Damdami Taksal headquarters in Chowk Mehta, Amritsar. He attended the event as a representative of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During the event, Mahajan referred to June 6 as a “kaala din” (black day) and strongly criticised the 1984 military operation carried out at the Golden Temple. He also criticised then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for ordering the Army action, as per the news agency reports. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai with Ministers and officials regarding the grant of permission to remove silt from waterbodies for the welfare of farmers and potters. According to an official release, there are 40,000 lakes and ponds in Tamil Nadu under the control of the Water Resources, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Departments. Before the onset of the northeast monsoon, the silt deposited in these waterbodies will be removed and provided free of cost to farmers, potters, and for domestic use. This will also help increase the storage capacity of waterbodies. Farmers and potters have been asked to make use of this opportunity and remove the silt free of cost under the supervision of officials of the concerned departments. The petitioners, in their PIL filed through Advocate Ashishraje Gaikwad in the Bombay High Court, claimed that they are “deeply aggrieved” by NCERT’s “unilateral, arbitrary, non-transparent, and procedurally flawed decision” to remove the map from the Class 8 textbook, including Hindi, Urdu, and English social science syllabus of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
