Students of sealed seminary-cum-school hit streets, demand re-opening in Kashmir’s Shopian

Students and parents of the Siraj-ul-Uloom, which the administration closed under the provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) last month, on Thursday (May 7, 2026) took to the streets and demanded its immediate reopening in south Kashmir’s Shopian. Hundreds of students, accompanied by parents, hit the streets in south Kashmir and marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner. “Most students are from poor families. What is the sin of the students? How can the administration mar their future?” said a parent. Shopian legislator Shabir Kullay also joined the protesters and demanded steps to ensure the students’ career is not affected. Over 800 students are enrolled at the seminary-cum-school. “Illegal activities should not be tolerated. However, the future of innocent students should not suffer. The closure of the institute is unfortunate,” said Mr. Kullay. He said the government should intervene to “ensure there was no academic loss for the students”. Officials said the district administration was mulling to have the students admitted to nearby schools. On April 28, the seminary-cum-school was sealed under provisions of …

China calls Hormuz international waterway; Xi presses for reopening

Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for normal passage of ships, as Beijing described it as an “international waterway” amid assertions by Iran that it has an inalienable right over it. China calls Hormuz international waterway; Xi presses for reopening The Strait of Hormuz should remain open to normal navigation, which is in the common interest of regional countries and the international community, Xi told Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during their phone talks, an official statement said. This is the first statement by the Chinese leader on the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, followed by the US blockade of Iranian ports in their current conflict. The closure of the Strait has resulted in acute energy shortages across the world, especially in Asia, and China, which is a major importer of Iranian oil, is increasingly concerned about the prolongation of the US-Israel-Iran war. “The Strait of Hormuz should remain open for normal passage, which aligns with the common interest of countries …

Oil and gas plunge as Strait of Hormuz reopening fuels hopes of war ending

Oil and European natural gas prices tumbled after the promised re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz bolstered sweeping optimism that the US-Iran conflict will reach an end and ease disruptions to global energy markets. With the Strait of Hormuz witnessing an almost complete cessation of oil shipments due to attacks on ships and a huge spike in insurance premiums, the world’s biggest oil-gas producing region is on course to decouple from the global economy. (HT_PRINT) Brent futures retreated 9.1% to settle near $90 a barrel, reversing some of the rally sparked by the US-Iran war, while West Texas Intermediate slumped to roughly $84. European benchmark gas prices fell as much as 10% to end the day near €39 a megawatt-hour. Prices plummeted after Iran said it would open the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Brent touched the lowest intrday level since March 10. Also Read | How Iran war triggered natural gas shock The waterway, a chokepoint for about a fifth of the world’s …

Dubai and Abu Dhabi flights: Which UAE air routes are reopening? Updates on Emirates, flydubai and Etihad

Several international airlines on Monday resumed limited flights from the United Arab Emirates. This offered some relief to passengers stuck in airports and cities amid airspace closures following the ongoing US-Iran conflict. Emirates said it would operate select flights from the country. HAL Airport reopening: Stakeholders meet, deliberate on modalities

HAL Airport reopening: Stakeholders meet, deliberate on modalities

Is it finally time to see some action on reopening the HAL Airport, an air traffic hub right in the heart of the city, before the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) took all civilian flights away in 2008? After years of widespread public demand, the big stakeholders could be nearing a decision. However, despite the overwhelming evidence of public convenience, challenges remain. All the key stakeholders met in Delhi on April 15 and discussed the issue threadbare. A flashy new second airport for the city could take at least a decade to be operationalised. But if the stakeholders decide, the existing HAL airport could be up and ready for flights in weeks. The big question: Will the State and Centre, Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and HAL reach a consensus to act? Who will run the airport? The Delhi meeting last month had the stakeholders deliberate on the question of the modalities related to who will run the HAL airport if it is …

RAMAKRISHNA Hyderabad’s Tarnaka junction, barricaded for nearly a decade, was thrown open on a trial basis from April 18. And the jury’s still out about the change. Initially slated to end on May 2, the trial has now been extended, but the outcome remains as tangled as the traffic it’s meant to ease. The junction was reopened to assess how it would affect vehicular flow between Lalapet and Osmania University. But according to officers on the ground, the results have been far from conclusive. “We’re still deliberating whether to keep it open or shut it permanently,” said an officer from the Nallakunta traffic police. Public opinion evenly split The Hyderabad Traffic Police even turned to social media for public opinion, conducting a poll on X (formerly Twitter). The response was evenly split: 50.9% voted in favour of keeping it open with a signal, while 49.1% preferred it closed. But on the ground, the picture …
