Farm workers’ unions, activists announce protest from July 1 for VB-G RAM G repeal

The NREGA Sangharsh Morcha and the Joint Platform for Agricultural and Rural Workers’ Unions on Wednesday announced an indefinite countrywide protest from July 1, demanding the repeal of the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G). The VB-G RAM G scheme will come into force on July 1, replacing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), launched by the Congress-led UPA government in 2006.  Announcing the protest at a press conference in New Delhi, the organisations rejected the government’s claim that the new scheme would increase the number of guaranteed work days from 100 to 125 per rural household. They cited the recent budgetary allocation to show that the funds, in the best-case scenario, would provide only 42 days of work in a financial year. The organisations said the protests would continue until the proposed law is repealed. Taking a decentralised approach, these would be held at the panchayat level, the activists said. Fewer work days An analysis of the Centre’s proposed interim allocations announced on June 9 indicates …

According to him, the legislation perpetuates long-standing concerns about inequity in leadership opportunities within paramilitary forces. Claims of Denied Opportunity to Speak in Parliament The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha also claimed that he was denied the opportunity to speak on the bill in Parliament. He said he had requested adjustments to the schedule as he was on a pre-planned visit to Assam, but the government did not accommodate the request. Lawmakers are trying to repeal Section 230 again

Lawmakers are trying to repeal Section 230 again

Congress’ least favorite law is once against facing an existential challenge by bipartisan opponents. Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, are planning to reintroduce a bill to sunset Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act in two years. Repealing the bill, first reported by The Information, would remove protections that web services and users have enjoyed since the 1990s, which underpins much of the way the internet as we know it today works. It’s a proposal Graham has been trying to advance since 2020, and his spokesperson, Taylor Reidy, confirms a reintroduction is “in the works.” Section 230 shields any “interactive computer service” or its users from legal liability for speech that was produced by someone else — making it possible for social media platforms, as well as blogs and even listserv operators, to moderate content without fearing lengthy litigation over each decision. But critics have argued that it either reduces the incentives for large social networks to police illegal content like abuse and harassment, or, …

The government should have acted against those encroaching upon Waqf land, but instead, it has introduced a law that enables the government to take control …
