Kerala University researchers develop high-efficiency, lead-free solar cell

Kerala University researchers develop high-efficiency, lead-free solar cell

Researchers at the Kerala University have developed a new blueprint for the next-generation solar power by replacing toxic lead in perovskite solar cells for a mixture of tin and rare earth metals. The team has designed a solar cell that is not only environmentally “green”, but is also highly efficient. While solar energy is a cornerstone of clean power, the most efficient perovskite solar cells currently used in labs often contain lead, which poses environmental risks if the panels are damaged. The new study, published in peer-reviewed journal ACS Applied Engineering Materials, is expected to provide a realistic pathway to eliminate the toxicity without sacrificing performance. The School Education Department and the Public Works Department added more sections inside the art-deco building after the restoration. | Photo Credit: S.R. Raghunathan A space meant to store records has now become an interesting science park with STEM activities including a gyroscope, large-sized periodic table, and a touch screen teaching the human anatomy, at the Connemara Public Library, located inside the Government Museum campus in Egmore. Thanks to judicious use of existing space, the School Education Department and the Public Works Department have been able to add more sections inside the art-deco building that was recently restored at a cost of ₹4.58 crore. The own-book reading section, that allows people to bring their own books to read, and a civil service section, where students preparing for competitive exams can read in peace, are attractions for college students. Aravindan, a student preparing for his chartered accountancy exam, said he liked the ambience. The peppy children’s books section features interesting decor that young children will find comfortable for curling up with a book from the wide …

Karnataka Researchers Turn Fish Skin Into Eco-Friendly Leather | India News

Last Updated:January 15, 2026, 12:24 IST In terms of strength, fish leather often surprises first time users. Its criss-cross collagen structure makes it highly tear resistant, stronger than cow leather of same thickness. Traditional animal leather depends on fresh hides from the meat industry, while fish leather uses material that would otherwise be discarded. Image: AI At a time when sustainability is no longer a buzzword but a business necessity, researchers at the College of Fisheries in Mangaluru, Karnataka have come up with an innovation that could quietly disrupt the leather industry. They have developed a way to turn discarded fish skin into high quality, chrome free leather, transforming what was once waste into a valuable, eco-friendly product. The project is led by Dr B Manjanaik from the Department of Fish Processing Technology, who saw potential where most saw garbage. Every day, tonnes of fish skin are thrown away by seafood processing units. Instead of letting this collagen rich material rot in landfills, the team experimented with turning it into leather using a tanning process …

Researchers create photocatalyst turning carbon dioxide into fuel

Researchers create photocatalyst turning carbon dioxide into fuel

Researchers at the Guwahati Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) have developed a photocatalytic material that can convert carbon dioxide into methanol fuel using sunlight. The effort is aimed at addressing one of the most essential challenges — meeting rising energy needs without further harming the environment. The findings of the study have been published in the prestigious Journal of Materials Science. “The dependence on petroleum-based fuels continues to be a source of carbon dioxide emissions. To address this, researchers are working on designing photocatalytic methods to convert carbon dioxide into clean fuels,” said Mahuya De, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering.  Researchers worldwide have been working on addressing this critical challenge by utilising graphitic carbon nitride, a low-cost, metal-free, non-toxic material. However, due to limitations such as rapid energy loss and low fuel generation, no prominent solution has been developed so far. To overcome this challenge, the IIT Guwahati research team combined graphitic carbon nitride with few-layer graphene. Known for its electrical conductivity and energy transfer capabilities, this ultra-thin carbon material helped minimise energy loss within …

Indian Researchers Develop Nanoparticle Therapy Showing Promise for Alzheimer’s

Indian Researchers Develop Nanoparticle Therapy Showing Promise for Alzheimer’s

A team of researchers from Mohali’s Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Raebareli and Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) has led a breakthrough in a nanoparticle-based therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s disease which shows cell survival has increased from around 40–50 to nearly 90 per cent. The study, published in international journal Small, involves a multifunctional nanoparticle-based therapeutic approach for Alzheimer’s disease. “Unlike conventional treatments that address a single aspect of the disorder, the new strategy simultaneously targets toxic protein accumulation, neuronal damage, inflammation, and brain repair — offering renewed hope against one of the most complex neurodegenerative diseases,” Prof Nisha Singh, Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics at Gujarat Biotechnology University (GBU) told The Indian Express. Explaining the research, Prof Singh said, “Alzheimer’s disease happens when harmful protein clumps (called Aβ plaques) build up in the brain and damage brain cells, leading to memory loss and thinking problems. This research shows a new and promising way to treat Alzheimer’s disease by using tiny particles that work on multiple problems at once — …

Names proposed by Kerala-based researchers approved for Martian landforms

Names proposed by Kerala-based researchers approved for Martian landforms

The location of ‘Krishnan’ crater and nearby features | Photo Credit: Special arrangement A 3.5 billion-old crater on Mars will henceforth be known after M.S. Krishnan, the pioneering Indian geologist. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has approved it and several other names for Martian landforms proposed by two Kerala-based researchers. Apart from ‘Krishnan,’ the IAU has also accepted several Kerala-based names for smaller landforms associated with the crater. These are ‘Valiamala,’ ‘Thumba,’ ‘Bekal,’ ‘Varkala’ and ‘Periyar’ for smaller craters and a vallis (valley). Which means, these places in Kerala now have counterparts on Mars! The naming proposal was jointly submitted by Rajesh V.J. of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, (IIST), and Asif Iqbal Kakkassery, formerly research scholar at IIST under the guidance of Dr. Rajesh and who currently works as Assistant Professor in Geology at Government College, Kasaragod. Born in Thanjavur in what was then Madras Presidency in 1898, Dr. Krishnan was the first Indian to be director of the Geological Society of India. As for …

AI Researchers Secretly Used Reddit to Test Chatbot Persuasion

In a covert experiment now sparking legal threats, researchers from the University of Zurich deployed artificial intelligence (AI) bots to test how effectively they could sway opinions on Reddit — all without user consent. The bots infiltrated the subreddit r/ChangeMyView, which has nearly four million members and exists to facilitate civil debates on controversial topics. Over time, these AI agents posted more than 1,700 comments while posing as real users, ranging from a male rape survivor minimising trauma to a black man criticising Black Lives Matter. None of the subreddit users were told the posts were created by artificial intelligence. AI Chatbots Fooled Reddit Users in Secret Study, Triggering Legal and Ethical Firestorm As per a 404 Media report, the study’s findings were not announced until after the experiment had concluded; researchers and moderators of the subreddit revealed their activities and linked to a draft of their results. The draft noted that the bots were between three and six times more persuasive than human commenters, gauged through Reddit’s award system for changed opinions. To customise responses, …
