Punjab subsidies to continue, state has enough resources: Harpal Cheema

3 min readApr 3, 2026 07:46 AM IST Hours after policy experts blamed subsidies for the receding water table, Punjab Finance minister Harpal Cheema Thursday said that subsidies will continue uninterrupted and the state has enough resources. Speaking to mediapersons at his residence, Cheema said, “There will be no rationalisation. Punjab is a welfare state. We want the last person in the line to be benefitted. We will enhance our collections in such a way that these would not pinch. Look at the GST and excise growth. We have recorded an increase of 100 per cent under every head. It has been unprecedented.” He said the government was planning to provide solar pumps to small farmers who were not beneficiaries of free power as they did not have Tubewells. He said the state had fared much better than previous governments in finances. Cheema said that the treasury was never closed during the AAP government, while it was closed twice during the Akali-BJP government. He said that the e-Deposit Management System (EDMS) has been implemented to …

Last Updated:February 02, 2026, 17:26 IST The case arose after residents and a stone crusher operator alleged that the private lessee, Jai Dada Dohla Stone Mines, had caused massive ecological destruction. The Aravalli range occupies a unique place in India’s ecological and cultural landscape. (Getty Images) The Punjab and Haryana High Court has slammed illegal stone mining in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district, calling it a “blatant violation of environment norms” and “loot and plunder of natural resources”. The court noted that the mining site in Pichopa Kalan lies within the ecologically sensitive Aravalli hills, which are crucial for environmental balance in the region. On Saturday, a Division Bench of Justices Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Rohit Kapoor expressed concern over indiscriminate mining beyond the approved 11-hectare area at Khasra Nos. 109 and 110, Indian Express reported. The court said the activity has “much wider ramifications for preservation of ecology and environment as well as for the larger public interest”. ‘Redundant use of resources’: Walkers Association opposes skating rink in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park | Bangalore News

‘Redundant use of resources’: Walkers Association opposes skating rink in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park | Bangalore News

The Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association (CPWA) Sunday opposed the Karnataka government’s plan to construct a skating rink within Bal Bhavan premises inside Cubbon Park in Bengaluru. Recently, the Jawahar Bal Bhavan Society in association with the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES) mooted a plan to build a skating rink on half acre of land at an estimated cost of Rs 1.5 crore. S Umesh, President, CPWA, said a skating rink was entirely unnecessary in Cubbon Park. “A high-quality skating rink already exists at the Sri Kanteerava Stadium, situated just across the road from Cubbon Park. Constructing a second rink within the lung space of the city is a redundant use of resources that offers no additional public benefit while causing significant environmental harm,” he added. “For years, Cubbon Park has faced the creeping threat of urbanisation. The CPWA views this latest proposal as another step towards the systematic concretisation of one of Bengaluru’s last remaining green bastions. Every square metre of concrete laid is a square metre of earth lost to the city’s …

FBI director Kash Patel under fire for deploying bureau resources for girlfriend’s protection | World News

Patel’s use of government aircraft has also drawn scrutiny. (AP Photo) FBI Director Kash Patel is facing criticism over his use of bureau resources to provide protection and travel support for his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins. According to NYT, Patel has repeatedly directed tactical agents and government aircraft toward activities that critics say fall outside standard FBI protocol. Concerns escalated after an incident at the National Rifle Association’s annual convention in Atlanta earlier this year. Wilkins, who was performing at the event, arrived with two members of a SWAT team from the FBI’s local field office. The agents had been sent on Patel’s orders but left before the performance ended after determining that the venue was secure and that Wilkins was not in danger, according to six people with knowledge of the situation. The decision reportedly angered Patel, who chastised the team’s commander for leaving his girlfriend without what he saw as necessary protection and for not properly relaying their movements up the chain of command. BMC launches aquifer mapping project along Mithi river to enhance water supply resources | Mumbai News

Eyeing to enhance Mumbai’s water supply resources, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a pilot project along the Mithi river basin to carry out a geophysical study and mapping of groundwater levels to determine its quality and quantity. Slated to be conducted over the course of one year, the project will undertake aquifer mapping with the aim of developing new public recharge systems like borewells. The study is in line with the National Aquifer Mapping and Management (NAQUIM) programme by the Central Ground Water Board, which was initiated by the Jal Shakti Ministry in 2012 to prepare the area specific groundwater management plans. While the CGWB has been conducting its own mapping across the country over the past two years, the BMC’s pilot project is an independent study, being carried out by its environment and climate change department. The mapping project, according to officials, is aimed at making Mumbai’s existing water resources future proof in the wake of the climate crisis. Thirty years later, Jamshedpur still contains the world and all its resources within itself

Apr 11, 2025 18:43 IST First published on: Apr 11, 2025 at 18:43 IST Share As a government employee, especially as one heading an office, I sometimes find myself grappling with the question: What makes an area urban? My work involves working in a block. A block is a part of a district. The district I am working in right now, Seraikela-Kharsawan — whose headquarters are in Seraikela — is made up of nine blocks. Each block is made up of panchayats, each panchayat is comprised of several villages. The block I am working in is named Chandil; Chandil is comprised of 17 panchayats — village panchayats, to be more specific. We work for beneficiaries who come from the various villages spread across these 17 panchayats. Our block also has an urban area, placed under a nagar parishad. As workers in the health/medical department, we are given a catchment area, rural or urban, its population and our expected levels of achievements in the area, and then we get down to work. I quite regret not …
