25 years of Gadar and Lagaan: Two films, one release date and the rest is history

25 years ago today, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Lagaan hit theatres and went on to become two of Indian cinema’s biggest success stories. We speak to members of the film fraternity as they look back on the excitement surrounding this box-office clash and reflect on what makes both films enduring classics even today Lagaan, Gadar THE EXPECTATIONS BEFORE RELEASE DAY Filmmaker and trade expert, Girish Johar recalls that Gadar was already carrying tremendous buzz before its release. Its music had become popular and audience anticipation was high. In comparison, Lagaan appeared to be lagging initially. “People couldn’t quite understand what Lagaan was about from its early promotional material. The creative images showed 11 men in rural costumes. And at the time, (Gadar director) Anil Sharma was a far more commercially successful director than (Lagaan director) Ashutosh Gowariker, so the odds were largely in Gadar’s favour,” he says. Johar adds that Lagaan’s lengthy runtime also posed challenges. “Being a three-hour film, only a limited number of shows could be accommodated. There was also confusion over …

Shubman Gill formula to winning Tests: ‘Try to post 350-400 totals consistently’ and leave the rest to the bowlers

India captain Shubman Gill has acknowledged that batting is a bit of an issue for the team in Test cricket. Not against teams like Afghanistan, whom they beat by an innings and 300 runs on day three of the only Test at the New Chandigarh Stadium on Monday afternoon. It is against bigger teams. Clearly, Gill had the home whitewashes against New Zealand and South Africa in mind — and the away series against Australia in 2024-25. Shubman Gill used his resources pretty well. (PTI) “When you’re batting first innings, try to post 350 on the board every time you get into bat, no matter where we are playing, what kind of conditions it is. I think there’s enough trust in our bowling group that we can take 20 wickets anywhere. Whenever there’s a transition, we feel the batting group is under more pressure, and we are trying to get experience. We’re trying to build here to see what kind of game can work for us as a batting group and in different conditions and …

Candidates | Viswanathan Anand on Vaishali: ‘She was always in better control of her nerves than rest of the field’ | Chess News

3 min readMumbaiUpdated: Apr 16, 2026 11:44 PM IST After a phase of two years, where almost nothing went right for her, Vaishali Rameshbabu delivered the biggest hit of her career by winning the cut-throat Women’s Candidates tournament. Plenty has been said about how Vaishali was the lowest-rated player in the eight-woman field. But a true measure of just how much of a Cinderella tale her victory at Cyprus was can be drawn by the fact that she will still leave the Mediterranean island as the lowest-rated player among the eight, despite gaining 26 ELO points over the course of two weeks while most of the others lost rating. The win means Vaishali is only the second Indian woman in history who will compete at the Women’s World Championship after Koneru Humpy in Tirana in 2011. One of the early believers in the 24-year-old Vaishali’s talent was five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand, who named her in the first cohort of his chess school (Westbridge Anand Chess Academy). In fact, Vaishali was the only female prodigy …

Vaishali Rameshbabu had just been knocked out of the World Cup in July and returned home, falling ill immediately. She would miss out on tournaments for two months, trying to recoup, and discover a broader life beyond chess, which in fact helped her to fall in love with chess again, and this time feel “sorta, kinda something like happy.” India’s brand new challenger for the Women’s Chess World Championships after winning Candidates at Cyprus, recalled how the lowest point brought on enduring joy for the game thereafter. The year was 2023-24 – and it had been a rollercoaster, she told Chess.com two years ago. “It was just a food poisoning. But it was bad for me. In a way it was good. I took a break from the game, to take some positives from it. But I had to miss some tournaments,” she revealed to the website. The lead-up she told Chess.com had been filled with losses. “Last year was a rollercoaster. Wijk an Zee was ok. Didn’t play well in Grand Prix, lost my …
