The Madhya Pradesh High Court has dismissed a petition to restrain the release of HAQ, starring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi. Directed by Suparn S Varma, the film is inspired by the landmark judgement of the Supreme Court on Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum case, in which the Supreme Court ruled in favour of providing maintenance to divorced Muslim females. The petition against HAQ was filed by Shah Bano Begum’s daughter, Siddiqua Begum Khan, who argued that the filmmakers could not have made such a film and depict such events without taking consent from Shah Bano’s family or heirs. New Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Nishikant Dubey has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to “restrain” Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief KC Venugopal and expressed concern over the panel becoming a “surreptitious tool kit of some countries, inimical to the galloping strides of our country”, triggering a potential conflict before Parliament’s audit watchdog reviews the performance of markets regulator Sebi on October 24. Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court on Friday directed the counsel for the plaintiff to submit a list of WhatsApp numbers to restrain the circulation of a “sexually explicit” video on the social media platform. The video, circulating on social media platforms since November 29, purportedly shows a judicial officer and a woman. The case will be heard next on February 8. During the hearing, Advocate Ashish Dixit appearing for the plaintiff informed the court that the HC’s previous orders have been complied with and also submitted a list of URLs for Twitter and YouTube to block. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for WhatsApp, submitted that they will need a list of numbers to restrain from publishing the video further.
