Official estimates of the documents have increased from initially “hundreds of thousands” to over 5 million pages as new investigative materials were identified. Schoolbags break Indian children’s backs. Govt is reviewing design norms

The Centre has commissioned a study by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to update the 1982 schoolbag standard, said two government officials aware of the development. The revised norms will focus on balancing capacity, weight, and comfort—key factors in preventing musculoskeletal stress among schoolchildren. “The adolescent spine is in a critical stage of development,” said Dr. Rakesh Bagdi, a paediatrician and neonatologist at Gangauri Hospital in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan. “Carrying heavy or poorly designed backpacks can lead to musculoskeletal and postural problems that may persist into adulthood.” The 1982 standard, framed when most bags were made of canvas or rexine, no longer reflects current needs. Today’s school bags use lightweight synthetic fabrics, polyurethane coatings, and padded straps aimed at easing pressure on the shoulders. Queries emailed to the spokesperson of BIS remained unanswered till press time. “With the growing variety of designs, materials, and performance expectations, it has become essential to revise the existing Indian Standard for school bags to reflect current market realities,” a senior government official quoted earlier said. “The review of …

Amid Tensions With Trump, Canada Reviewing Purchase Of F-35 Jets: Report

Montreal: Canada is reviewing a major purchase of US-made F-35 combat planes amid serious tensions with the Trump administration, a spokesperson for the Canadian defence ministry told AFP on Saturday. That announcement came two days after Portugal said it too was reexamining a possible purchase of American F-35 fighter jets amid rising international anger over the tariff war President Donald Trump has launched and his wavering support for the Atlantic alliance. Trump rattled America’s northern neighbor by imposing 25 percent tariffs on all Canadian products before agreeing to suspend levies on Canadian exports covered by a North American trade pact.  And he has regularly infuriated Canadians by suggesting their country become the 51st US state. In one of his first official acts since taking office Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked the defence ministry “to determine if the F-35 contract, as it stands, is the best investment for Canada, and if there are other options that could better meet Canada’s needs,” according to an email from Laurent de Casanove, the ministry spokesperson. India reviewing crypto position due to global changes, senior official says

Representations of cryptocurrencies | Photo Credit: Reuters India is reviewing its stance on cryptocurrencies due to shifting attitudes towards the virtual asset in other countries, a senior government official told Reuters on Sunday (February 2, 2025). The review, which follows crypto-friendly policy announcements by U.S. President Donald Trump, could further delay publication of a discussion paper on cryptocurrencies that was due for release in September 2024. “More than one or two jurisdictions have changed their stance towards cryptocurrency in terms of the usage, their acceptance, where do they see the importance of crypto assets. In that stride, we are having a look at the discussion paper once again,” India’s Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth said in an interview. Mr. Seth said that because such assets “don’t believe in borders”, India’s stance cannot be unilateral. He did not specifically mention the United States, where Mr. Trump last week ordered the creation of a cryptocurrency working group tasked with proposing new digital asset regulations and exploring the creation of a national cryptocurrency stockpile, making good on his …
