SC task force says separate law for violence against docs not required | Latest News India

The National Task Force (NTF), constituted by the Supreme Court to propose measures for the safety of health care professionals in the aftermath of the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, has recommended against the need for a central law to address violence against medical personnel. The report also emphasised the importance of integrating modern technology, such as CCTV surveillance at entry points, emergency rooms and intensive care units. (HT Archive) Instead, the NTF has affirmed that existing state legislations and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 provide adequate safeguards. The NTF’s findings, presented in a detailed report, highlight that 24 states have enacted laws addressing violence against medical professionals and health care institutions, with two more states preparing similar legislation. These laws, combined with the newly enacted BNS 2023, are deemed sufficient to address both minor and major offences. The hunger strike will be held by IMA’s Junior Doctors  Network (JDN) and supported by IMA’s Action Committee. With the hunger strike, IMA has pitched the slogan “Suno Bengal, Suno Bharat” to resonate and amplify the demands of junior medics in West Bengal who have been on fast-unto-death for the last 11 days. The first round of talk lasted for nearly 2 hours at Mamata’s residence, followed by another two-and-a-half hours of finalising minutes of meetings. In the meeting, Mamata accepted the protesting medic’s demands and decided to remove Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Goyal will resign at 4 pm tomorrow. After the meeting, Mamata Banerjee addressed the media and said that the talks yielded positive results. She said that Goyal is also ready to resign from his post. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) was looking into at least seven properties of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and his wife, suspected to be “purchased out of proceeds of crime”. The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted raids at the residence of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. A 31-year-old trainee doctor was found brutally raped and murdered at the Kolkata college last month, sparking nationwide outrage over the safety of doctors and women in the country. The probe agency has conducted raids at 5-6 locations connected to Ghosh and his associates. The house of Prasun Chatterjee, the hospital’s data entry operator, was also searched by the ED.  Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday in connection with alleged irregularities at the hospital during his tenure.
